which phoronix in question doesn’t do a raytracing section in particular with, so what data are yuou expecting phoronix to pump out? Their literal choice for raytracing is Quake RTX, as its linux native title. This is a situation where you’re looking at the wrong type of reviewer if you want a specific piece of content.

of course its not all games, but it becomes significantly more messy for the reviewer to test it becuase you start getting anomolous data based on a decision made in advance.

also its a phoronix review, and last I recall, raytracing is spotty on linux and dependant if it uses wine or not. in the case for liek cyberpunk it does, but if a game doesnt natively have raytracing, its uses are more mixed

because actual FPS becomes volitile regardless of GPU because at 1080p, many games become CPU bottlenecked, so it becomes less of a question of the GPU being able to do something, but if your CPU is fast enough to maintain it. the benchmark then becomes very muddy because it may not be representative of what to actually expect.

The previous generations 4090 was already very cpu bottlenecked often at 1080p alone.

if youre considering a 5080 or 5090 for 1080p, youre looking at the wrong market.

definitely not true as my laptop(not my main gaming device) has both my windows and linux drives (seperate ssds) with different formats. Linux is on btrfs, and windows on ntfs. my steam on windows works perfectly fine on storing games on my btrfs portion. (i do it sometimes because linux is on my larger SSD). id imagine its how steam, or some elemement on steam on linux, handles NTFS

maybe, depends on steamOS hardware adoption rate. You’re far more likely going to see windows regress in performance rather than linux get better upper tier performance on average (imo)

theyll optimize for linux whent he market grows enough for it, which I personalyl believe will only happen when Linux gets at least ~30% of the steam hardware survey OS market.

there are edge cases where linux performa better, especially with older apis because dx9/dx11 to vulkan allows for more draw calls than thr native language can do.

then you have rare situations like elden rings launch ehere shader caching was broken on windows and vulkans shader caching on linux worked making elden ring play better on linux

basically it goes over the whole process in general, and each country enforces and has laws of various degress on it. For example, with console dumping and flashcarts int he US are deemed illegal. Nintendo has already sucessfully shut down some stores that offer modding services without even necessarily offering up the illegal goods. Flash cart companies online already go through lengths in order to help the customer “avoid customs” as flash carts legally speaking, aren’t legal to buy in the U.S, and normally is supposed to be confiscated at the border. Not all agents are aware of it though as it’s not as strictly enforced and known like drugs or weapons would be.

its because people are too attched to using the native option. Theres nothing stopping people from using 3rd party start bars for years now. Conceptually to me, complaining about the start bar is almost akin to complaining about things in internet explorer, when 3rd party options exists.

Think how agressive Microsoft puts ads in edge. theres absolutely nothing stopping a user from switching browsers to ignore that. Start bar is the same.

isnt that the point of using a 3rd party option. while windows isnt as customizable as Linux, i fond it odd that people are trying to customize the native windows button instead of using a 3rd party one and customizing that, in which you would have much more control of the function.
