Secondhand Pixel -> GrapheneOS if you need locked bootloader (e.g. have family/work-sensitive stuff on phone) or just look on the LineageOS device wiki and find a phone model you like. Best reason to use Android is treating your phone like a computer, reliable background syncing (or restriction), good permission management, going without bloatware saves storage, battery, bandwidth, your personal time and frustration. Termux is basically an operating system, and the stock OS will not let you fully utilize it. If you just want to game get a good Chinese phone if it’s legal in your country & compatible with radios etc.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•How does one get into Open Source, generally?
2·7 days agoYeah they actually recommend the Cheogram web client as a way to use the phone gateway on desktop in addition to Dino (and the irritating Jitsi/Jami SIP setup that works if you don’t mind two apps and are attached to your Gajim setup). I had not noticed, or that there is in fact a directory of public Jabber rooms, until today
IIRC you are American (sorry for the insult if not) which means you have a great phone gateway option. I did not: had to contact my telecom tbqh it took like two months 🤣 🤫

3·7 days agoIf you want to text normal people, I recommend Cheogram (XMPP) rather than Element. It’s more of an open internet standard, it’s very lightweight and battle tested, and the app I mentioned for Android can be bridged to phone+SMS gateways, there are some default services available or you can be very industrious and make your own
If you’re looking for more examples of software to replace what you have, Pipepipe is probably the best vehicle to directly stick your thumb in Google’s eye. It’s the most frequently-updated NewPipe fork

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are the most tantalizing questions you have about Cold War history?
1·12 days agoBeyond just Red October that’s a nice project idea. Go through popular Cold War movies and explain which bits and pieces of real events made their way in. What was grafted, altered, or bowlderized. Plus, it’s a rich seam for video clip editing. Good question

1·12 days agoI hereby bestow your woke card. I am a historian (just kidding) so I can assure you, not hurling your children across the room & treating them as more than property is quite woke. In 20 years, hopefully we will all be considered to be on par with the guy who invented Wheaties in wokeness (no, no, very bad)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are there any phones or tablets out there that can run on the charger cable only, completely missing the battery?
2·24 days agoIt’s a toggle that limits the battery to 80%. So it wouldn’t work with the battery removed like some laptops as OP is looking for. Not aware of any like that.

3·24 days agoPixel has bypass power. It’s unfortunate that it’s paying Google. I’ve been very happy with my used 8 on Graphene.

They all do, except like Xiaomi, it depends on which surveys you look at. I saw some higher early-life failures, but again I said secondhand to avoid giving Google money directly. That’s the GrapheneOS option, or Motorola right. I provided several other options.
