I am not from the USA and not an English native, can someone help me understand the exact meaning of “leave street” Vs “leave yard”? I would assume the “leave yard” would be before “leave streat”?

We moved to a neighbourhood with few cars and a nice park, but there were almost never kids in the park… until they built a new set of play equipment. The influx of kids checking it out created a critical mass that lasted.

For some reason, seeing all the other kids there made some parents feel safer letting their kids play there unsupervised, even after dark.

I’d like to know the stats in other countries. I’d also like to have a “why” chart like, don’t trust the kid, don’t trust the environment, don’t trust other people, my kid is an asshole, etc.

I agree with the author about improving infrastructure to address the rise in safetyism. I know I’d feel better letting my kid roam around if there were fewer cars zipping around.
