The search on Peertube is not great for finding what you’re looking for, so what are some channels that you follow on Peertube? Right now I have Veronica Explains, themaritimegirl, and Ewen Bell (all from MakerTube, the instance I setup my account in). I’m interesting in technology, science (especially astronomy and physics-adjacent topics), photography, and that sort.

Also, dunno why, but I’m unable to subscribe to channels outside the MakerTube instance, like the Linux Experiment or Niccolò (KDE dev). Is this a Peertube-specific problem, something to do with the MakerTube instance, or something I can change in settings (is there a toggle that prevents subscribing to other instances?)

edit: It looks like I’m able to subscribe to other instances, I think it might be a network thing on my end? Not sure though, but it works now. Still interested in new Peertube channels to follow!

    PeerTube is horrible for finding even channels you know exists. I thought doing a duckduckgo search for “the linux experiment peertube” would have given me a result to the page, but turns out the easiest way was to go click on the first link, which was to a The Linux Experiment blog post, about leaving some other video service and moving to PeerTube, and finding the link there… https://tilvids.com/c/thelinuxexperiment_channel/videos

    Anyway, thats the only one I can suggest, besides Veronica Explains, that I watch through PeerTube. I usually find the links to them through Lemmy. I haven’t been able to find new ones, or rather, I’ve given up on trying.

    The whole thing is just a giant mess. I get that its a feature of the decentralized service, to be a bit of a mess but does it have to be this big of a mess? I remember trying to figure out how to subscribe to things through there, apparently you need to make a account. Sure, of course, makes sense. But then I read that you shouldn’t really make a account and save the account for creators? Not sure if thats instance specific thing, but I didn’t really bother finding out. Someone suggested to make a Mastodon account and use that, but I somehow failed to do that as well. I’m not sure how or why, but I gave up on that as well. So yeah, I’ve given up on trying to figure the thing out and just use it whenever I happen to stumble a link to a video hosted there.

    Shame, really. I wanted to use it properly but its such a hostile experience and every time I’ve tried to figure it out, the answers have been very unhelpful or I’ve just found people asking the same questions as I do, with no answers to them. Bummer.

      I agree discoverability is not good, but after gathering subscriptions for a while, I do have a decently active timeline. As for the account, yes it is useful to have one on some instance, especially because of the remote subscribe feature that I found is a reliable way to subscribe to a remote channel. I used to have an account on a public instance which at the time allowed to register an account. Now I host my own.

      Things that I found helpful to discover content :

      • Follow the #peertube and #livestream hashtags on Mastodon. People tend to advertise their peertube content there.

      • Use the peertubify browser extensions so than any video you watch on YouTube that is also available on peertube gets redirected. I was surprised to find some extra channels this way

      • Search for specific content using Sepia https://sepiasearch.org/
