What was your motivation for seeking out non-mainstream platforms? Why did you choose this platform?

    Switched to Mastodon when Musk took over Twitter in 2022. Switched to Lemmy when Reddit banned 3rd party apps in 2023.

    I was interested in decentralized platforms before. Technically Diaspora was my first “fediverse” social network, but it lacked content so I didn’t use it much.

      Same. I didn’t even use the 3rd party Reddit apps (browser only here), but I knew what that kind of corporate control meant. I’m disappointed that more people didn’t drop Reddit at that time. Oh well, we’re taking the long game.

        To be fair at least Relay is still going, it’s just paid now because of the nonsense. But if reddit ever does something to make Relay not be able to work at all, or gets rid of old reddit, that’s when I’ll be gone for good. But for now I’m browsing both. Lemmy is more active now than when I signed up, it seems. Or maybe I’m just figuring it out better, haha.
