Most platformers you just keep going to the right.
Sonic has you going left, up, down, and all around. Sometimes you hit dead ends. Sometimes you don’t even have much control over where you go (such as in the casino levels). It was frustrating.
If the goal of Metroid was to get to the right most side of the map as fast as possible, I probably wouldn’t have liked it, assuming it used the same exact map.
(I also didn’t have it as a kid and only ever played it at Sears and Toys R Us if it was on the demo machine 🤷♂️)
