Fwiw I’ve actually thought about a dead man’s switch for a while now. When my partner and I were going through end-of-life stuff, having the ability to delete or open things as needed after you’re dead can be important.

I have a rough design in my head where you register various monitors (e.g. checking email, logging into Lemmy, etc) and so long as you reach a specified threshold you’re considered alive.

Build in a duress code or dead code that can be entered by your next of kin, then you got something workable.

For a dead drop like you described in your OP, I agree that instructions to an attorney is probably your best bet. But in the scenario you’re describing, it sounds like having this code won’t be valuable.

I’ve reached the point of absolutely hating rechargable batteries. Between their ghost discharge, and the fact that I don’t go through as many batteries like I used, using normal alkaline batteries seems to be the best for me anyway.

I get the feeling you’re like me and you might be over-thinking it. If you’re new, if I heard it, I’d pass it off as you sharing your skillset. Remember they hired YOU because they believe you can do the work.

Switching licenses to future versions doesn’t invalidate previous versions released under GPL.

I’m not a lawyer but I deal with OSS licenses for work and I don’t know if there’s ever been a case like this, that I can think of anyway.

Their previous versions, still being under the GPL, would require them to release a change to make it usable on desktops. Again, I’m not a lawyer here but there is a lot of case law behind the GPL and I think the user who made the issue could take them to court to force them to make the change if they don’t respond in 30 days.

Iirc, once reported, the project has 30 days to remedy or they are in violation of the license. They can’t even release a new version with a different license since this version is out under the GPL.

It’s one of the reasons why I hate license proliferation. These custom licenses aren’t tested against case law so if they think you’re in violation you have to defend yourself.

They should have just kept the source closed! The speculation is that whomever purchased it wants to crowdsource contributions without adding any value themselves.

I shop at 4, maybe 5, different grocery stores. Some products I have preferences whereas others I don’t.

For example, say this is my grocery list for the week:

• grapes (never buy at Walmart)
• composition notebook
• ground turkey (only buy at Wegmans, unless there’s a sale)
• oat milk
• chocolate chips
• eggs

I want an AI to scrape every grocery store’s weekly ad or their website along with any coupons that are available, and determine the best price and, based on patterns of sales, what I should wait on and what time of day I should shop.

There was a Twitter post about great uses for AI but it’s not being developed. The one I aligned with was scraping grocery store ads and creating a shopping list based on the best prices and personal preferences.

AI is solving problems for the business class. They are trying to stop paying people. AI has use cases to actually make our lives better but are antithetical to the capitalistic companies and would likely try to stop any AI use that undermines their bottom line.
