Honestly, k8s + GitOps at home is my project that I’m just starting this week. I found a community around it (on Discord 🤮) called Home Operations.

Docker Hub sucks and is VERY strict with rate limits. Try ghcr.io or the aws container registry.

GitOps + Renovate

Gives you:

• automation of updates
• smart notification of updates that are below a certain confidence that it won’t break stuff
• rollback: simply git revert
• the whole shebang

Some stacks that work well with GitOps are:

• k8s + Flux or ArgoCD
• Nix(OS)

Mixing them is a LOT of complexity though. Just pick whichever you are most comfortable with. If you want a declarative immutable OS just for running k8s, check Talos Linux.

If you don’t want to deal with GitOps, Nix or k8s, and you don’t need recent versions, just run Debian and set a cronjob for auto updates. Then only deal with potential breaking changes just once every 5(?) years or thereabouts.

Won’t something like MicroG allow you to use the full features without Google on your phone?

I have been planning on migrating to Proton (I know, wrong community) and this could very well be the year. Just 2 gmail and 1 hotmail address/inbox to migrate but would love to follow the tips given here.

I have some questions to specify your case:

• Did you use tags a lot? Did you use them purely as a hierarchy (i.e. could it be mapped to folders) or do you have a lot of crossover between tags?
• Do you have a custom domain or is the original email on the gmail.com domain and the new one a different address?

How is SteamOS on the Deck dealing with this? I thought they also used gamescope

Use gamescope to run the game under Wayland. Gamescope creates an XWayland window (for which you can specify things like resolution, upscaling, and refresh rate) to run the game in, so the game can pretend it’s under X11, and gamescope interacts with Wayland.

I’m sorry, you’re right it is another important piece of the puzzle and my comment didn’t really add anything.

Bazzite is based on Fedora.

OP is probably mostly running into hardware, rather than software limits. While ProtonDB does include hardware reports, it’s made to check Linux compatibility primarily, and other benchmark sites will be better suited for OP. Most single player games should run well on Linux now.

F-droid repos are amazing and a must-have, but the default F-droid front-end is not the most user-friendly.

I have been very happy with the Droidify front-end, as have other F-droid users to whom I recommended it.

You can get Droidify using F-Droid, of course.

PPSSPP: I initially installed it because my PSP Go was failing and corrupting my save files.

Dumping all the PSP files onto a pc and loading one save with PPSSPP, fixed all the saves. Then I put them back on the PSP to continue my Gran Turismo career while commuting on the train.

It was mind-boggling to me that the emulator could fix the original console. Of course, it also does all kinds of upscaling, double framerate, etc.

After this happened twice though, I replaced the PSP with a Steam Deck. Sadly, the large stick on the Deck has caused me some trouble with controlling the higher end cars. PSP has no analog triggers, so all the finesse is in the flick of the ministick. I should load up GT4 (PS2) on the Deck soon. And MGS 1 through 3. Am very happy playing GRID (2008) and Death Stranding for now though.

All Linux installations use Proton, DXVK and Wine to play Windows games. That is the biggest power of the Steam Deck. The rest is just bonus.

You can launch Big Picture mode on any pc with Steam installed for ease of use with a controller…

Software-wise, if you are using a Linux installation with KDE interface, on an AMD CPU and AMD GPU, and are using a wayland session with gamescope to play games, it is very VERY close to the Steam Deck and you are benefiting from all the optimizations that were made for Steam Deck. Bonus points if the hardware is Ryzen 3000 series and Radeon RX 6000 series.

You probably saw this, but Nexus Mods are asking feedback from Linux users, not just Steam Deck. Because, you know, apart from the sticks, size and touch pads, Steam Deck is just another Linux machine.

Just install Linux on your laptop or desktop.

If you want a hassle-free setup, get Linux Mint, or if you use Nvidia, Pop!_OS.

To get as close to the Steam Deck setup as reasonable, get EndeavourOS with KDE. It is Arch-based and may require maintenance though.

Kubuntu is a good middle ground, with the same desktop interface as SteamOS (KDE) but also pretty hassle-free setup.

I think gamescope needs a Wayland session, as it renders games in their own Xwayland “screen”. Mint does not use the Wayland session by default, but the old X11 one. I think Mint added an “experimental” Wayland session recently, so you could try to enable that.
