For Charles III it’s the exact same situation
Flax@feddit.ukOPtoToday I learned@lemmy.ml•TIL that Taiwan isn't the only Chinese province controlled by the Republic of ChinaEnglish54·4 months agoTaiwan is a province of China governed by the Republic of China.
Except the tiny islands this post is about, the rest of China is governed by the People’s Republic of China.
Taiwan has never claimed to be a separate country. While functionally, the province of Taiwan in China acts as it’s own country, it’s government claims to be the true government of China, which Taiwan is a part of, hence it is perfectly correct to say Taiwan is a part of China - geographically. It’s just not a part of the People’s Republic of China nor governed by the CCP.
Kinda like how Belfast is a part of Ireland, but the geographical entity of Ireland, the island, not the country/political entity referred to as Ireland. It’s a part of the United Kingdom, which is a sovereign state, but not part of Great Britain geographically, but if you’re using the term Great Britain to refer to the political entity, like Team GB at the Olympics or Great Britain Pounds/GBP, then it would be correct to say Belfast is part of it.
For the history, the Chinese civil war between the Communists and the Nationalists never fully ended. The communists pushed the Nationalists out of mainland China and stopped fighting, but they never chased them out of Taiwan or the islands mentioned in the post.
As for Hong Kong, that is a part of the People’s Republic of China, the special administrative territory thing is because of a deal made with the UK.
De facto, Taiwan is an independent country, but nobody refers to it as such, even themselves. Hong Kong kinda functions like a country itself, although it doesn’t deny that it’s part of the PRC.
That’s why I said Taiwan is a Chinese province - it is geographically, but not politically with what most of the world would recognise as China. Same as how Belfast can be described as an Irish city, but it’s not Irish in the political sense.

Flax@feddit.ukto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why in 2024 do people still believe in religion? (serious)English11·1 year agoIn short, I evaluated the arguments, then realised that the arguments for Christianity were far better than the arguments against. The main argument for atheism is the standard of proof, but anyone can present them with all of the proof they’d like and they can still say “not enough”. There were people around in Jesus’ time who still didn’t believe yet saw the miracles and His resurrection
Flax@feddit.ukto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why in 2024 do people still believe in religion? (serious)English2·1 year agoI don’t really get why people think it’s “science or religion”. Although there are some things to consider:
-
If there are laws in the universe, it may be proof that there’s a law giver of some kind?
-
The beginning of the universe was a recent discovery in science, previous non Christian belief was that the universe had always existed.

Flax@feddit.ukto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why in 2024 do people still believe in religion? (serious)English1·1 year agoI don’t. My religious beliefs are something I came to myself. There is lots of evidence for a very early church, and the core story around Jesus hasn’t changed much, unlike other legends that evolve through history. The New Testament is pretty reliable as a historical document and many times atheist critics have been wrong, and their arguments are usually very easy to debunk.
Flax@feddit.ukto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why in 2024 do people still believe in religion? (serious)English1·1 year agoI wouldn’t make it that high. A large amount of Christians I know of are converts.

Flax@feddit.ukto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do people say "Catholics and Christians" in (USA) when Catholics are also Christians, as if they refer to it as a different religion.English4·1 year agoThey all generally affirm the same things though, it’s just the Bible doesn’t say exactly how to practice Christianity, so add two thousand years and weird theological technicalities like real presence (and how much real is the presence, it’s a spectrum), church structure and organisation, authority, etc, then you have a bunch of different denominations. Most of them though do actually respect each other in an ecumenical fashion. The “Catholics aren’t Christian” sect would be a fringe minority, the same type who would believe the world is 8,000 years old and that the KJV is the only proper English translation.
