A very large portion (maybe not quite a majority) of software developers are not very good at their jobs. Just good enough to get by.

And that is entirely okay! Applies to most jobs, honestly. But there is really NO appropriate way to express that to a coworker.

I’ve seen way too much “just keep trying random things without really knowing what you’re doing, and hope you eventually stumble into something that works” attitude from coworkers.

Yeah, you need a way to specify what you want with a high degree of both flexibility and specificity. We have a term for that in the industry, it’s called “writing code”.

He’s got a healthy love for video games, and there’s certainly plenty of overlap in favorite titles (Celeste, Mario Odyssey, Pokemon, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Link’s Awakening). But there’s also games he enjoys that I don’t (Bloons TD, Gemcraft, Mario + Rabbids, Mario Maker) and games I enjoy that he doesn’t (Hollow Knight, Breath of the Wild, Factorio, Satisfactory).

We also watch a handful of different animes/cartoons/shows together (with some episodes or scenes excepted). We’ve done Avatar: The Last Airbender, Futurama, Sword Art Online, Death Note, Animaniacs, and we’re currently working through The Owl House and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

On top of that, he’s got hobbies I’m not into. He loves drawing and takes Karate classes. We play D&D together as a family, but it’s not really my thing otherwise. As it happens, these are all interests he shares with his mother.

For work, I have 2 monitors, and my docked laptop. The main two monitors are hugely beneficial for software development, as I can reference design docs or requirements while writing code, or I can have the debugger running on one screen, while the app runs on the other.

The laptop screen is where Teams and Outlook sit, so I can glance over at messages from the team, and maybe respond, without having to swap around any of my workspace.

Not really, no.

The point is that everyone does have them, but only rarely are they visible to the human eye.

Unless you’re doing something crazy, like super-long runs (like, across a whole building) get the cheapest thing you can find that’s rated for the minimum spec you need (like, if you want 4k at 120fps or whatever, lookup which HDMI version is needed for that, and buy at least that). There’s literally no such thing as a one-lead voltage meter. Voltage is, by definition, the difference in potential energy between two points.

Any tool that can give a voltage reading with one probe has a second probe you’re not considering, or is estimating voltage based on a some assumptions about current or some other factor being measured.

In addition to what everyone has said, you should probably prep your daughter for this kid feeling betrayed by her. Presumably, he told the gun stuff to her privately, or the school would already be on it. When he finds out that she told you and then you told the school, he may not take it well, and start treating her differently, and she should probably be aware of that ahead-of-time. Ideally, whatever’s troubling him can be dealt with, and he’ll come back from it, but it could be that whatever friendship they may have had won’t recover.

Also, if you haven’t already, you should reinforce that she absolutely did the right thing by bringing this to you.
