Hank hasn’t been in charge at scishow for a while. When he is on scishow now, his job is read and present an article written by someone else. The fact checking and editorializing was done before he arrived for shooting the video. He also has publicly said it’s not his place to jump back into that company and grab back power he has given up. Being mad at Hank for the knitting thing is insane if you are familiar with how scishow works.

Yes some people enjoy minimalism but most of the time you only see minimalism like this in real estate. The goal of minimalism in real estate is to allow you to see a blank canvas. There are two schools of thought. You can show a potential buyer what you think is a good use of the space to give them an idea of what to do with it. Or you can show them next to nothing and allow them to fill in the blanks with the furnishings and decor they would be bringing with them into the home. I much prefer the latter when looking at a space to move into. I couldn’t live in such a sterile place but I can much better visualize where all my shit is going.

There are pretty big issues with both Sailfish and FuriOS. Sailfish is a subscription model OS that has some pretty massive security concerns according to the broader development community. Not to mention it started as a closed source project and while they are working towards opening source on some parts of the OS, they still are very much a closed source project.
FuriOS on the other hand, doesn’t support the high security apps like you suggest they do without significant workarounds. Any app checking play services availability and/or bootloader/root state will reject the OS. It is also very much not for the Everyman. Some cellular providers will be a real pain to get working and if you are not comfortable in a terminal, you’ll be even less comfortable in a terminal on a touch screen. Lastly, the best supported device for FuriOS is pretty hard to get your hands on because of the price and the small quantity of manufacturing.
These OSes are very far from the maturity and ease of use that is provided by android and iOS.
Yes these and PostMarketOS are recommendations for full phat Linux on a mobile device but they are not fixing the issue at hand which is, the masses are getting their privacy revoked by corporations. Your grandma is not going to use any Linux phone. She just ain’t doing it man. She’s going to let Google do the Google thing or apple do the apple thing.
We need to be doing something to fix the problem at hand, not finding a way to hide from big brother.
Since when does a static IP address cost less than a streaming service? Domains sure. But a static is like $20-30 a month. I use dynamic DNS for any services that need to access the WAN side of my firewall (very very few) and I use tailscale for all things on my local network I need to access from outside. I would never let my media server or NAS touch the WAN.

I have seen things mislabeled in Linux in the past, I’ve also seen minor bugs in Linux. It’s not broken if the software still works fine. Bugs happen with or without AI.
Apps can reserve RAM without using it. It is totally normal for apps to do this on every modern OS. Linux included. The amount of RAM reserved is not the same as the amount of RAM that app is using. And apps don’t have a strangle hold on R being reserved unless that RAM is actually in use. Windows will automatically take reserved RAM away from one app and give it to another app that is out of its reserve space. This is all very normal.

Apps reserve a portion of the total available memory. That memory is not necessarily in use. Memory not in use will still be available to other applications as soon as the system reallocates it when a given application needs more. Usually of you have more RAM, applications will reserve more of it. You can check a better explanation of your current memory usage in the windows resource monitor. You’ll see memory allocated, memory in use, and memory being used to cache data (which windows does to reduce disk reads and writes), as well as memory completely unallocated. Chrome can easily allocate 1/3 of your total available memory by the third tab, but that doesn’t mean chrome is actually using that much.
They aren’t even saying that. They’re saying, you can’t sell steam platform keys outside of steam for cheaper than you would on steam. Because a steam key provides all of the services and quality of life of buying a game in the steam store (downloads, cloud saves, workshop, multiplayer, etc.). If you sell keys outside of steam for a consumer to use on steam, steam still has to treat that consumer like everyone who bought the game on the marketplace. Also, when you sell a steam key, valve doesn’t take the usual 30% cut of the sale. In fact they take no cut of the sale and STILL provide distribution and services for that sale.
No, it would be like Amazon saying that a manufacturer cannot use Amazon to ship goods sold on their own website if they’re going to sell at a lower price. That is reasonable. Steam keys are a means of distribution. If steam is going to provide the file transfer, cloud saves, multiplayer server hosting, community page, and workshop page for your game, then don’t sell your steam keys for less than the game on steam.
If you want to sell a key for epic for less than you list the game on steam, they do not stop you from doing so.
You’re a weird one. I donate regularly to my most used open source projects if they have a primary development team. But that’s not even the point. The point is, open source software isn’t usually published as a way to make loads of money. Usually open source software is created out of necessity or as a passion project. You won’t convince many Lemmy users that a corporate product meant to generate capital is the better use of time and resources by such a wide margin that we should spend our money on it. Jellyfin exists despite Emby closing source. Feel free to continue to pay for Emby. I’ll use the community resources that are on offer for free and are more than good enough for my use case.

I didn’t suggest I wasn’t using closed source software or even that one was better than the other. I said you are in a community of open source enthusiasts scratching your head as to why nobody recommends a paid closed source application that has a history of turning it’s back on the FOSS community. Bro, if you want to use Emby, nobody is stopping you. Jellyfin is the popular solution because it is open source. Emby isn’t a project, it’s a product just like plex is a product. Both Emby and Plex started as free methods to host your media and converted to a paid closed source solution. Jellyfin is a fork of Emby from before they moved to closed source and remains free and open to this day.
I don’t disagree with that. I just disagree with the placement of the outrage.
