Sound advice. During my first year of computer science, one of my professors told me that programming languages are just a tool to solve a problem. The logic to solve it is the key. Whether it’s Java, Python, Go, etc. If you don’t know how to tell the computer what to do, you can’t program anything in any language.

A little explanation, there are two different types of drivers:

• Kernel Drivers: The low-level software that directly controls your Video card, managing essential functions like memory and power.

• User-space Drivers: The higher-level software that translates graphics commands from applications and games into instructions your video card can understand.

Here NVIDIA wants to kill the proprietary kernel driver and have the open source kernel included in the kernel by default. This means that the distros or you simply need to download the user-space binary blob driver without having to recompile the kernel driver every time the Nvidia drivers are updated.

Haha. we’re officially old. I was an extremely competitive gamer back then. I played Quake 3, UT 99, Tribes 2, America’s Army, etc. I was even in a Tribes 2 squad and we basically practiced for tournaments every day.

But now that life is stressful enough with the responsibilities I have, I just can’t play competitive games anymore. I just want to enjoy the story. I no longer have the stamina and the reflex for competitive games anymore.

I use Proton Experimental to play my games and they all work without exception. I’m in my late 30s, so I no longer play competitive games that have a kernel rootkit, I mean kernel anti-cheat.

Basically, Linux gaming is like this: If you want to play competitive games with anti-cheat, stay or play in Windows. For all other games, play in Linux.

I haven’t “nuked” Windows yet, but I have resized the drive it currently resides on. Instead of taking up the whole 1TB, it now only takes up 256GB, which means I can no longer play on it.

My take, be pragmatic. I still go to my city and career subreddit because that’s where I get my city news and career advice. And I’m in Lemmy because it really does feel like the Reddit of 2008-2014 and I love it here.

I’ve been an iPhone user since 2017, so I’ve been out of the loop. Are battery issues due to misbehaving apps (like flashlight spyware apps) still a thing on Android?

I don’t think it’s a good idea. Most people are not tech-oriented, which means it will be a huge security risk. And I want my smartphone to be a phone first and foremost. I want it to have a good battery life so that if I need to make an emergency call, I can rely on it.

This is not an anti-American comment, but a fact. The USA is a superpower and a big country. As a superpower, americans don’t need to be informed about what happens in the world because it doesn’t affect them. Their country is the source of world power. And Americans tend to travel within their country because it’s big and full of tourist attractions.

Compare that with Canada, which has 40 million people. We need to be aware of every single decision the US makes so that the country can adapt. There is a famous quote from Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau: “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.”

instances are like countries with their own constitution (rules) and police (mods). This means that two communities in different instances may seem the same, but they are not, because they have to follow the rules and culture of their instance.

Just like a Technology club in Japan will not be the same as the Technology club in the US because they will be culturally different. I think it will take some time for the Fediverse to think this way.

For me, this is better. Instead of having one giant technology community where your comments and posts are drowned out, we can have different technology communities with their own culture and norms, just like we visit different countries. Your comment and posts will be not drowned out.

It is a different paradigm to the centralised one of Reddit.

Slashdot -> Digg -> Reddit -> Lemmy. Back then, web servers didn’t have a lot of resources. So if a Digg post was popular, it could slow the site to a crawl. Then we all knew the site was being “Digged”.
