Does Lemmy life feel any different using your private instance now?

I did this this year for wildfire smoke, and it works great. Having said that, it is not quiet and the way I was using it was to run it at full blast for an hour, then leave it off for most the day.

If you wanted an always-on solution, I think I’d actually suggest a commercial air purifier.

The model for most the content on the internet doesn’t work without advertising. The people who are “zero tolerance” on ads are going to prevent possible compromises from being made and just encourage an arms race. I don’t think we win that arms race, we get more insidious forms of tracking and brazen advertising.

I like the phone a lot, but whenever it’s talked about I’m surprised how many people feel the urge to chime in on why it wouldn’t work for them.

I’d say my biggest gripe is lack of accessories. I paid the huge price for the official screen protector twice. They both cracked relatively quickly and there are pretty much no other options. I’m using a flexible matte-finish screen protector from Amazon now, but it scratches really easily and will slide around on the screen if I keep my phone in my back pocket.

I can assure you there are many women out there who aren’t picking men just so they can brag about their interests. If your concern is trying to find a partner, making negative, sweeping generalizations about women isn’t going to work in your favour.

I mean “interesting,” as in, have some depth, be passionate about things. I don’t think it matters if it’s sky diving or stamp collecting, just don’t make “getting girls” your thing. There are people, and for a time I was among them, who just do things because they think that’s what’s going to woo the ladies. But, how interesting is that?

I’ll grant you that some interests may be more conducive to meeting potential partners, but surely there’s something you care about that has some aspect that can get you out of the house. I like computers and I also don’t care to leave the house. It turns out, I love computers enough that I will tolerate going to conferences and meetups. 🤷‍♂️

Do you like dogs (Or cats, I guess)? The animal rescue I volunteer with skews heavily towards women. Help some animals, make some friends.

Of course, don’t just do it to meet women. If current me had some relationship advice for younger me, it would be to be patient and just make sure you’re out there doing things you actually like doing. And be interesting, which, comes from getting out into the world and doing things you like.

There must be more to it than this. As a Dr. Pepper connoisseur I can tell you that Dr. Pepper from a can tastes far superior than from a bottle.

I blame AI. I notice ChatGPT is always trying to put that into my emails. Maybe because of that, I’m also noticing it in lots of emails I get.

I’ve reconsidered my view of Anker being a quality brand. I bought a USB C hub of their’s that was supposed to provide 100W power delivery, but it couldn’t keep a 65W Dell laptop happy. So, I powered the Dell separately and still used the hub. After a while the display port started to cut out.

I’ve also bought a USB C PD cable of their’s that was supposed to support 100W power delivery. With my 85W MacBook I noticed that the cable was starting to get hard (non-bendy) spots in it. Soon after my MacBook would report being unplugged when I did anything that would draw significant power.

Ok, so I go over to Amazon and start looking at reviews that are 2 or 3 stars and holy shit. I got the distinct feeling that these were the real reviews. They’re not good.

Their rechargable batteries are so incredible deal.

If you’re strictly doing backup you could checkout Hetzner’s “Storage box” (or something like that name). For something more S3-like I like StorJ, but, that might be a lateral move price-wise from Backblaze, I’m not sure.

I’m not sure I experience exactly what you describe - I’d describe what I hear as a radio just barely audible in the background. I only experience it when I’m about to fall asleep or supposed to be getting up.

Ten or so years ago after a really long day of school I flopped down in bed and noticed it and I made a conscious decision to listen rather than move. Ever since it happens a couple times a month now. I’ve never found it concerning and it’s maybe almost comforting, like, “oh, that thing is back.”

It’s exactly like a soft radio where you’re only catching bits and pieces of what’s being said. Sometimes I recognize unusual words I heard from that day, the voices are distinct and can be female or male. I can’t decide if I can influence what’s being said or not. I do think the harder I pay attention the more coherent things start to sound.

My feeling is that bits of what I’ve heard throughout the day, or maybe longer, are getting played back to me. But I’ve never recognized any of the voices of heard anything said that I could identify as verbatim from the day.

Yeah, I tried naming the files to help, but then Google Photos doesn’t make it easy to see those.

The first picture is the vent outside. Essentially, the hood fan (inside) exhausts into the top of the metal box that’s in the wall. On the other side of that box, around the middle, is a vent that goes outside. Then there’s just a dead-end area of the metal box where some bugs have collected.

It was built in 2016, but maybe they made some initial mistake. Hopefully that’s not it.

I’m not going to be much help ATM, but I believe there is some Google service that allows you to use “foreign” email addresses to log in to a Google account. What that would mean is that you could move your domains away from Google but then keep the Google accounts based on those domains active.

Anyway, fingers crossed I remember about this and actually find the thing I’m taking about and get back to you later today.

Pressing the “Home” key will take you to the top of a page (Function+Left on Mac I think), unless I’m misunderstanding what that extension does.

This is only slightly related - I lost a small number of files with DreamHost object storage, and they were charging more than S3 per GB.

So, I agree you usually get what you pay for, but also make sure the provider is all-in on the product. I think DreamHost really isn’t interested in their virtualized/cloud offerings.
