Lol if I had truly infinite money, this is a story of what I would do.

I would first have a “magical investment bank” that would promise 200% per annum with interest paid monthly, but only if paid in cash and at least 50 million to start. Have this scheme open for a few months with actual results and interest paid out. This is to get billionaires and megacorps to liquidate their assets into soon to be worthless monetary instruments. Then, everyone in the world but the top 0.1% would get 1 trillion. Everyone’s debt is virtually erased, and the old top 0.1% can go ahead, get their money back and feel bad about themselves. With all currency effectively rebased to a billion times than previously, now we can work on solving the world’s problems as shoulder-to-shoulder equals. Give the world food, give the world shelter, give the world healthcare, give the people of the world a purpose, give the people socioeconomic freedom, give them trains, give the world a chance at reversing disastrous effects of climate change.

If it didn’t work, then my money would be just as worthless any way (unless my infinite money powers could manifest in bottle caps or whatever the newest thing people found value in was).

I have been saying a number of times over the course of my time here, that I think the “echo chamber”-ness of Lemmy is by design.

Each instance is moderated by a different team of people who run their server under a different philosophy. You can see clearly in this thread many from the lemmy.ml instance express mild disdain for “liberals”, whereas other instances like lemmy.world and lemm.ee don’t hold such animosity to that collective extent, but admins hold other expectations for what should be the norm. The way I view the Fediverse is that it’s a collection of echo chambers, which within them help foster discussion between like-minded individuals. However these are networked with each other so you can wander outside that bubble to other instances when you feel like it. You also have control to block groups and instances you don’t vibe with.

I know some instance moderation policies remove posts and comments that go far against the grain, but in other instances, unpopular takes just get super downvoted but left for people to see.

Still better to learn that on the examination course than on the road.

You’re absolutely right. GeForce Now IMO is a shitty service and I wouldn’t use it, but I’m glad it’s available for those that want to play R6Siege, Valorant, Fortnite etc.

TL:DR; Reddit sucked, I got bored when it was offline. Lemmy has similar moderation BUT a transparent modlog. Post grouping, more niche communities I’d like to see.

I had first heard about Mastodon in early 2022, but since I wasn’t into Twitter-style posting I kind of forgot about it and moved on.

The quality of discussions I was having on Reddit had noticeably declined over the years, and top posts were bots posting reposts, and the top comments under those posts started to become straight up copied from past top comments.

Compact mode got turned off, and later the apps had an outage in March 2023, so it was actually out of boredom when I had stumbled across Lemmy for the first time. It was a tiny thing of around a few hundred active users across all sites then.

API pricing scandal happened a few months later, my distaste for Reddit increased and simultaneously Lemmy’s popularity exploded. So for June I made it my transition period to convince others to join, and in July I made my farewell post, swearing never to post or comment on Reddit ever again. I peek into Reddit on occasion but Lemmy had fully replaced my Reddit habit by September.

Conversations here have been far more lively, nuanced, mature. It doesn’t always happen, as there are immature clowns and trolls here like anywhere, but we have reasonable people who are able to have a productive conversation while having positions at odds with each other. This virtually never happened on Reddit.

Tip for you, there are some types of comments allowed on some communities but banned or frowned upon on others. If you get a comment removed, check the modlog, filtering for your username as to why it may be. It may feel like censorship or power tripping, but at least it is more open and transparent. You can make an account on another server or post on different communities, if it’s simply a matter of differing philosophies with the controlling admins.

I’d want to see grouping features of communities, and also there are a number of bounties on features that would be great to see. Development isn’t fast so I just have to be patient. More niche topics would be cool to have.

This is the best practice, especially for AskLemmy but it also applies to news and other media threads. It’s best to put your personal thoughts and opinions in a top-level reply, while keeping the post body to clarifications or summary of the posted question or media.

If there’s one or two prolific posters you keep seeing and it’s annoying to you, you can block them. If it’s certain communities you can curate that for yourself too.

You can also “block all bots” (but the bot flag is generally self-reported). If you think that a bot is not reporting itself correctly (and it’s not just a terminally online lemmy user) then you can report them to that instance.

Only the first half of that feeling might be true and the second is definitely untrue. It’s not going to be perfect either, but it will be a mix of nice things, amazing things, annoying things and awful things.

If something is not working, try something else. That “something else” may be another method to get it work, or it may just be replacing your original goal with a different one.

Either way, success will come to you, as long as you take care of yourself and keep in good health, are open to broaden your definition of success and not focus on a singular objective that everything must go perfectly as planned. You’ve made it this far in life, that is a success in itself and I know you are capable of much more when you set your mind to it.

There are lot of things you can give up, the main thing is not to give up on yourself. Take breaks as you need. Start by fixing even the tiniest thing that needs fixing in your life, like picking up one sock off the floor, or wiping down your bathroom sink. Instead of thinking you’ve lost everything, start from what you have and build from there.

Even in the best of times, there’s been news that has brought despair to me. The way to overcome it is to tune it out a bit, with music, with fresh air, or if it’s a chronic problem, with therapy and treatment based on a physician’s recommendation, and reframe your focus to things you can accomplish, have accomplished and will accomplish.

TL:DR; ml is for Marxist-Leninist, but each server has their own philosophy and rules, so just comment and post on other servers if you want nothing to do with this. On censorship, modlogs are public so there’s no hiding stupid admin actions unlike Reddit.

To give you context, the lead developers of Lemmy and maintainers of the lemmy.ml, are Marxist-Leninists, and that’s why it’s .ml and that’s related to the signup process. Esoteric signup processes (most other servers are just describe why you want to join) are there to help prove you’re not a bot or troll or are aligned with that server’s values. Lemmy.ml is a general topic instance but their moderation has a pro-Russian, pro-China slant, and have been known to ban comments and users speaking against that on controversial (e.g. Ukraine, Gaza, US politics) threads. That’s the reality, there is a lot of valid criticism of that from within and outside Lemmy, but that’s also their perogative. (That sounds not great, but stay with me here.)

However, being part of the Fediverse, this software extends beyond the developers’ own political whims. So, you aren’t subject to their philosophy if you don’t post on .ml and aren’t registered with them. Other servers have different policies, some more laissez-faire like db0 or ee, some very protective like beehaw.

I hope you can understand that even if admins sometimes have power trips, they don’t have the power of Spez to kick you off the whole platform or enforce awful rules. If we compare Reddit to a kingdom where you can be expelled at any moderator or admins whim, Lemmy is more like a fiefdom where you can only be expelled from the duchy. If you’re an extremely unlikable troll, every server will reject you.

Because these relationships between servers are organic, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows and there are a lot of topics people can and will disagree on. Please just try to be reasonable with your fellow user and moderator, try not to get upset if your post is removed (double check the rules of the community AND server you post to) if you get 20 downvotes on something unpopular (though it’s avoided on lemm.ee since downvotes are disabled). Modlogs are open so if you think a ban/removal is unfair/unjust, appeal to your mods/admins first, if you think it’s still unreasonable or part of a power trip rampage you can have a discussion about it on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com, !fediverselore@lemmy.ca, !modabuse@lemmy.sdf.org, and mention your old user handle for people to judge whether it was justified or not. Unpopular stuff often doesn’t get censored unless it breaks rules, or is just plain mean, trolling, flaming or unproductive.

Compared to other national and international chains, I’ll pick Dominos. Here in Vancouver there are just so many local pizza shops and smaller chains to choose from, even the cheaper/quantity over quality chains taste better than both Pizza Hut and Domino’s (I’m thinking Freshslice for the Western Canadians in the room). Even corporate pizza events here don’t go with Domino’s, which was the go to when I was elsewhere.

It’s a useful tool, but there is a security concern for anything not fully open source. You will have to weigh your risk factors, I doubt that it’s any problem for most consumers or distro hoppers.
