When I was younger I just put a chunk of foam at the end of my regular mattress to make up the gap.
In the last couple of years a it’s custom made foam sheets with latex. Not cheap but possible from local foam shops or upholstery shops.
You can also find smaller traditional mattress manufacturers too but it’s not cheap but it’s still an option.
A Maple Bed frame that was custom made for me by a relative woodworker. It’s longer for my height.
It seems to also be a switching task issue in our minds. These changes of states takes more effort than playing the next video does or just keeping on what we are doing. It’s so much easier for us to keep playing the digital dopamine slot machine that, TikTok, instagram reels, Facebook and YouTube short videos provide.
From a business sense they want to keep your attention, from a biology sense we are safe and don’t see a need to move with the random rewards another quick video offers.
It’s amazing how well they have refined getting and keeping our attention. We also get rewarded with dopamine from the anticipation of the next story or short video. It gets we don’t even really need the next video, just the anticipation is enough to reward us with more dopamine.
I’ve read doing a simple reverse mental countdown of 5-4-3-2-1 blast off helps us switch gears from another part of the brain. It can also help us get out of bed or off the couch.
Mostly the same here with NPR and the Economist thrown in.
I do recall trying out Chatroulette when it first came out but it was a lot of mushroom caps I wasn’t interested in seeing so I didn’t stick around long.
Back before that when I was dating some of that included the personal section of Craigslist. Unfortunately there was some horrible attacks of sex trade workers that used the personals down in the US and then the US government came together to “protect” people by holding the websites liable.
In the process the personal section of CL which included dating and penpals was closed. Many people met their spouses and had long term relationships and friendships as a result of CL that they wouldn’t have had in real life. I think it some ways that dating section was much better than the juiced up dating sites that have followed since. They are more about driving revenue than true connections.
I’m not sure if they solved the sex trade problem, but I don’t think they have won the war on drugs either. Much like the gun lobbying crowd say innocent gun owners shouldn’t be affected I would think in the same way users of internet services shouldn’t be either.
But life isn’t so black and white and many of us are unable to get beyond this stage of adolescence…

However later on there was more support even among Americans with the US Nazi party that existed and tried to run in elections.
To be fair many around the world saw Fascism as a new exciting way to run a country until war broke out. Then those Nazis and fascists were only good when they were dead.
I wonder if those cosplaying as Nazis today understand they aren’t the heroes they think they are especially when it comes to US WW2 veterans, (many would consider the real heroes) would want these newer Nazis dead too.
The Dearborn Independent from Henry Ford was one of the most wildly distributed papers of its time due to the Ford dealer network and how Ford was lauded as a the hero that brought the car to rural folk giving them freedom.
It’s unfortunate that his antisemitic views were often the main things one would find in his paper that many would have just accepted as fact. Ford a brilliant man in many ways but this was one of the few ways in which he wasn’t.
As I’ve become older the old “unhealthy” meals of bacon and eggs were not fully bad way to start your day in the sense of protein over carbs and sugars.
The latter leaves one hungry and snacking all day with no way to ever really get full. As much as bacon isn’t healthy for us the protein start is better for blood sugars than oatmeal or cereals to break fast.
For those that grew up on hashbrowns or left over potatoes fried the next morning, it’s a staple.
Perhaps being one of the first major Distros in the sense of being easy enough for many less tech inclined to switch from windows and not need to know as much command line.
I had tried older and other versions of Linux but back then Ubuntu mostly just worked. Being a leader in that sense has held them in the place where its safe to dive into Linux despite the various other flavors that can do it better. The PR is a lot to overcome for newbies that are overwhelmed on it. It’s only later after getting a footing you will be brave enough to try over flavours.
For me Linux Mint is a no brainer place to start with my older hardware than Ubuntu now but I don’t think they have the word of mouth like Ubuntu. At least with Ubuntu if they are even aware of something more than Mac or Windows they have probably heard of the name not really knowing what it is. Many aren’t Googling Arch for first time installs I suspect.
For me it’s Block This! ad blocking, and every phone I own gets Smartlauncher. It makes every phone the same.
Depends on market. In Vancouver existing rentals are controlled until you move, the house sells, or you are reno-evicted. This involves evicting the tenant to “fix up the suite” and then renting it out at a much higher rate.
There is also the move to evict for a " family member" to move in but often this is abused to get low paying tenants out.
New mortgages are much more than existing rent here. As much as renters go through credit checks, I think landlords should too as you don’t want to rent a place where they can’t afford the interest rate increases. Often they cheap out on repairs and usually sees the place being sold or one of the above abuses of the evictions to get a higher paying tenant in.
The market is really tight in places like Vancouver and Toronto. The interest rate hikes will eventually catch up to most renters as properties are moved/sold.
I bought a Dyson upright ball which was an expensive purchase at the time. I thought it would cover everything needed. What a pain in the ass to use the hose and attachments.
Great if trying to reach the ceiling but tedious to use and put away. Not easy to use near the vacuum either.
I have a ryobi cordless vacuum that I found was being used more often as it was a easy pickup and vacuum on the go especially for small jobs. I bought an adapter to allow it to use the Dyson attachments so now it looks like a stick vacuum without the fuss of the Dyson ball. Game changer now I’m told.
With a smart watch (I’ve owned a few over the years) my phone has been on silent for years. No more dings, beeps, or rings especially in meetings or with other people. I set it to vibrate only for text and calls. Game changer. I wish those in sales would use them more.
While a debit card has less in fees, it’s your money that’s lost if it is hacked or compromised unlike with a credit card where it is the credit card’s money on the line not yours.
It’s a shame so much time has passed for the public to even recall how much Teddy fought for the average Joe blow public with his first deal. He fought the corporate overloads and they couldn’t believe he couldn’t be bribed like those before him and since.
