Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Hypothetical: Humanity is planning a year of shutting off the internet to quell the advance of the AI singularity. You can keep your computer but there will be no networking. What would you do to prep
11·8 days agoWell the question stands. If only internet as generally understood goes off I simply join alternatives or extend my lan and hamsterize content to share it. If any network is subjected to forced closure then I can only do the storing part and keep steam stuffed. You never question hypothesis ?

41·8 days agoI would start by questioning how that would prevent the rise of the singularity… either it exists on an air-gaped network and it’s unecessary or it’s all theatrics because a true singularity emergence would likely use the other less known networks to realise itself.

Technology@lemmy.world•Federal Bill Would Bring OS-Level Age Verification to the Entire U.S.English
6·9 days agoAbout that last sentence; the same crap is creeping in Europe at the very least. There was another press release about the eu commission iirc welcoming a similar decision in spirit. Just not implemented at OS level but web-side.
Not sure or Asia and Africa are feeling about this but unfortunately USA is not alone. which in my opinion gives credits to the various theories that it’s being pushed by gafam.

15·24 days agoIn Europe we have the AI act which, as of August, will introduce some form of transparency obligations. Not perfect obviously but a start. Probably will not be followed by the rest of the world though so like GDPR it will be forcibly eroded by other’s interests through lobbying but at least we try.

Technology@lemmy.world•US, EU move toward landmark biometric data sharing deal that give the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) access to fingerprint and other biometric records held by EU member statesEnglish
61·25 days agoUh? It’s a bit less generic than that… some activities of governments are excluded from the scope but not all data processing from government agencies are.
For example this particular personal data processing likely fits under the prevention of criminal offences and threats to public security and is highly unfortunate but let’s keep shit factual.
I’m 40 years into trying to become fluent-ish in Dutch and it’s going to need another lifetime to get there unfortunately. So English to Dutch ain’t much of a passerelle.
Back in the days it is said that our Dutch speaking neighbours had an « easier » time learning English because they didn’t had much in the way of local content. Whereas as a French speaker we have all dubbed so less pressure to get introduced early to English.
I find it super funny that you position French as easier than English. In what language are you native? From my anecdotal evidence discussing with a sizeable amount of foreigners French is among the most hated / difficult western language to learn. Possibly because of all the prononciation shenanigans, it’s not like in Dutch and English where sounds are somewhat logical.
Well what would be an easier language ? French? Dutch? Not German, that one looks atrocious. If it’s not relative then all foreign languages are hard to newcomers I guess. Personally I remember that learning enough English so I can somewhat communicate was quite easy because of the mass of available content to read / listen to / watch.
