  • That’s not a civil war though, that’s stoichastic terrorism at least and militia violence at most. I, uh, was just in a disaster in the us where militias were said to have been run off by the national guard and local law enforcement.

    It’s still scary, but it’s not civil war.

    To give you an idea of how common what you’re describing used to be, when 9/11 happened people who hadn’t already gotten the word from the federal government were blaming it on domestic terrorist organizations and individuals. We had just come off of a decade of federal law enforcement torching Waco, sniping ruby ridge, package bombs, federal building bombs (including wtc!) and school shootings there at the end.

    The harmless nut job was such a common idea that the Feds had to really struggle against it when they bungled Waco and ruby ridge.

    There’s been thirty years of domestic counter terror training to deal with just this type of situation. Fifty if you count the bender mienhoff group in Europe as the start.

    You may see Waco 2.0 but you won’t see a civil war.

    No and you should not listen to people who think it could.

    A civil war is large scale armed conflict between groups vying for the levers of power. In the case of the American civil war it was over slavery and came to war because there was no mechanism to integrate the south’s elites into the power structures of the north’s or vice versa and the material bases of those two groups power structures were in opposition.

    What two groups would fight an American civil war nowadays? Democrats and republicans? They serve the same masters. We are witnessing propaganda bent to the ends of integrating members of one group into another.

    Separatist militias? Not only would that not be a civil war, we saw how the fbi handled them in the 90s.

    Corporations? Why would they do that? Government already does the unprofitable things they want and does them how they want them.

    Separatist states? It’s against the economic interests of the very people who would make up the elite class of the new nation of Texas to submit their borders to taxes and tariffs.

    Workers? That’s a revolution, not a civil war.

    If someone wants you to fear modern civil war they’re trying to control you.

    If someone makes art about a modern civil war they’re trying to tell you about something else on the sly, like with zombies.






  • I gave a quick overview in another post, but in case you’d like some guidance unique to your repair, post pictures with the legs of the port and the spot it goes in with good enough focus and zoom that I can see the traces and pads and legs.

    I do this kind of repair work every day, if everything is in good shape it’s no problem but if you have a damaged port or ripped pads/traces then you’ll need to change tack a little.


  • You’re gonna need a hot air station. If it’s actually usb3 and not just usb in a c sized connector then you usually wont be able to do it with just an iron.

    The process is:

    Clean the site and all through holes (they won’t be for usb pins but instead for physical connection). Use flux.

    Reapply solder to all surface mount pads.

    Preheat the area.

    Apply flux.

    Manipulate the new port into place. If you can, tack it down at a few spots.

    Reflow all the pins. Use flux.

    Have you confirmed that the port itself isn’t damaged? The pads it connects to?





  • How much (metal, refined, produced on earth) wire would you say is required to produce an air (actually vacuum, but we know air core really well so there’s math for them) core electromagnet which can generate a field capable of deflecting solar wind over the area of its pv array? In order to maintain that field strength, how much current is required? Can it be supplied by a pv array equal in area to the effective field area? How many of those are needed to cover the area of mars?

    That’s-a lotta metal!

    Also speaking as a person who deals with e-waste daily, it’s both by volume and mass composed of petroleum products. Fiberglass is reenforced plastic. Ics are 90% plastic by volume. Discrete components are made of petroleum distillates in a lot of cases and encased in them in even more cases!

    Even if you only considered the boards as the e-waste and not the plastic cases and bodies themselves, those dont exist in a vacuum like our hypothetical electromagnets, a reduction in printer boards means fewer printers which are almost completely just plastic.


  • The scale of what you just described is really goofy.

    It’s also a very delicate shield against a very serious problem.

    I don’t think it’s feasible to protect a mars-diameter disc of massive magnets from damage by either normal objects traveling through the area or from some human engineered attack.

    If you’re imagining the capacity to create such an emplacement, don’t you imagine that such phenomenal effort and wealth of resources would be better spent solving some terrestrial problem?

    There’s a real difference between e-waste, which is mostly byproducts of the petroleum refining process with electronic components smeared liberally on, many of which rely on petroleum byproducts themselves and electromagnets, which are, at the scale you’re discussing, massive chunks of metals refined, shaped and organized into configurations that will create magnetic fields when dc is present.

    I have a hard time imagining a level of focus required to bridge that gap.
