So many Russians abroad praise the homeland while enjoying the relative freedom that other countries bring to the table. Yet none seem to understand that others don’t want to live in Russia either.

Ukrainians tend to be proud of their national identity - which, yes, I know, only Russians are allowed to be, but apparently many people don’t seem to care - so it’s pretty hard to convince them to go back to being second class citizens of yet another attempt at a Russian Empire.

They have no reason not to at this point.

Dude, most of Europe is also pledged to help the US when attacked. In fact the US is the ONLY country ever to have invoked article 5.

Ukraine is not a member but is strategically important to NATO because it’s strategically important to the Russian empire’s restoration, which we kinda want to prevent. Plus they’ll be a powerful ally once they can join, which they really want to nowadays.

Now the US could go full isolationist, but if a Russian-Chinese alliance takes over all of Eurasia, y’all are really going to lose out on a lot of trade and access to resources, plus might actually be susceptible to invasion if you have no allies left.

The common thing between this and GOG is that they apparently offer DRM free games so if you’ve got the game backed up, you’ll never lose access to it. If Steam suddenly disappeared, we’d all be fucked.

Oh and I mean since we’re talking DRM free games, they’ll get uploaded to torrent sites anyway. Don’t even need to keep them backed up yourself.

Or they just fork and stop sharing source code. Self-sufficiency would just mean not having to depend on any future contributions. Nobody can stop them from having access to all the old stuff.

“Break a leg” is close, but more reserved for some grand performance

So in Estonian we have a bunch of those I don’t remember because nobody uses them anymore. But the main one everyone knows is “Kivi kotti” (literally, stone/rock in your bag, but much like with “break a leg”, you actually wish them well). It’s still basically “good luck” but not so much for grand performances, it could just be for your first day of work, or going fishing (the real origin I guess). There’s also “Nael kummi” which is “nail in your tire”, which is reserved for people driving somewhere.

It’s currently used by a billion people worldwide. If it was irrelevant, devs wouldn’t be worried about it breaking things now would they

If tracking being off by default was the issue, the share of Firefox users should be consistently under 1% because who even turns on tracking?

The reality is, nobody outside of tech circles uses it anymore. Hell, a lot of devs even prefer to not support Firefox if they want to do something non-standard that Chromium allows and Firefox doesn’t.

Safari sucks but it has actual usage numbers and is currently the only reason not to put a big ass “this site only runs on Chromium” error on a lot of websites.

The Safari-Chromium illusion of choice might be a better deal for iOS users but that would still be only 2 browsers to choose from. Mozilla ain’t gonna invest in anything that isn’t AI or advertising. Firefox on iOS is a pipe dream.

Here is my two cents: The author mentioned you can’t have a social app without push notifications: I hate the idea that everything should be able to grab my attention. Though obviously the support is needed.

But also, Safari is the last browser stopping Google from total market dominance. Firefox is irrelevant. And this is coming from a Firefox user who remembers when 2.0 came out…

Man I live in a country with socialized healthcare and we don’t get dental either. Or vision.

There are private insurance providers who offer both. But they ONLY offer services to employers and I’ve never had a company offer such a benefit. Because you don’t need luxury bones to work and any employer who makes you work with a screen is already forced to cover up to some sum every year or every few years (I don’t remember) spent on glasses. And there’s little point in all the other coverage because it’s already free.

I’m this close to starting my own company so I could offer myself dental…

It’s called OpenStreetMap and there are many apps for it! Organic Maps is a good one and I like it for when I go abroad and want to preload an entire country instead of downloading maps on my paltry 33 or whatever gigs of roaming allowance (that also only works in the EU - if I want to visit the US, I get to pay out the ass for 250 MB or 1 GB at a time)

You’re on track for early retirement. You’re likely well-disciplined.

Take this windfall, or at least some part of it, for something to enjoy. A holiday, a reasonable new vehicle if you drive (I.e not a luxury car of course), or maybe home improvements. Hell, make it a classic car that appreciates in value and only drive it on the weekends in the summer.

You can’t take your money to the grave with you and none of us truly knows if we’ll even make it to retirement. It’s great that you’re disciplined financially, but you should also enjoy life while you’re still young.

OR throw it all into whatever you’re currently investing in, and retire a year or 2 earlier. Idk.
