The reason a very small subset of users love it*

All the downloads making it the top app in the app stores are from people using their centralized service. The people behind these downloads have no clue that you can run it locally or can even start to understand what that would even mean. It is this usage the article is addressing.

Like the thread starter, I am also confused to why this in particular draws so much hate.

I also use Nextcloud gpodder - it’s been set and forget in my case, very easy. Use Kasts on desktop, and AntennaPod on my phone.

Oh boy, I got my units mixed up. I am used to reading bits per seconds as bps and bytes per seconds as B/s. However, the network activity on Linode is given in Mb/s. Now the numbers make a lot more sense, and the transfer speeds are well within the limits of my network and what I am used to seeing on my laptop on WiFi.

Thanks, I didn’t consider something like that. Would have wanted to see some more detailed graphs from Linode to see how long these max speeds were sustained, but I can’t seem to find it.

I find joy from creation. For a long time (2010s) I barely created anything, just consumed. Now I try to do a lot of different things. 3D modelling, game creation, music composing, writing, coding. My skill level doesn’t matter, as I am not dependent on these skills as a source of income (apart from coding to some extent), and the lower my skill, the easier it is to take some big leaps doing these activities, and that progress can yield happiness. I like having several different things as well, as if I lose motivation for one thing, I am not stuck between having nothing to do and forcing myself to do something I don’t really want to.

The other thing is nature. Slowing down and walking in the forest, in the mountains etc. Listening to a waterfall, to the birds etc. Fresh air. Good stuff.

How so? I have many feeds oeganized under different groups, and that works well for me. What functionality would you have wanted?

I have the ultimate from 8BitDo (4 of them actually), and I really like it.

You add https://divestos.org/apks/official/fdroid/repo/ as a repo in F-Droid settings. After that you can choose which repo to prefer for Mull.

I changed to the Divest-repo for Mull, and they have an updated version that has fixed these security issues.

ETA: Different signing keys though, so you can’t just update it, but have to reinstall.

For installing plugins, I am fine with it, but would not want any telemetry being sent somewhere without my knowledge. The data collected should stay on my server.

Ah, I see. What kind of disk usage are we talking about over e.g. one month? I am (at least for now) not necessarily interested in long term storage (but the data hoarder in me might quickly change that).

But how do you access the files from another app? Where are they stored? I have nothing in the com.nextcloud.client folder for example. Proton Drive mounts in the left-hand menu of Files. Would be nice if that was achievable with Nextcloud also.

EDIT: Turns out it does if there is no app passcode enabled. Not sure I am comfortable having that turned off though.

I have a mini-PC from Minisforum (not this one) dedicated as a media computer in my living room. It can fit nicely inside the TV bench, which a regular sized computer wouldn’t do. I like that I can play games like Horizon: Zero Dawn on it without any issue. I love it, and I gave about 800 USD for it.

I am planning getting a high-end rig for my office later (next year maybe?), and then I of course will not consider a mini-PC.
