Np and I can see that you’ve gotten an introduction to the political culture war that’s being waged on lemmy (assuming you weren’t already aware). Lol

One more piece of info that I wished someone had given me when I first started is that a huge majority of lemmings are cool; but there are significantly more center-right users than leftist users so you’ll see more of the vitriol you witnessed in this post coming from the center-right instances like lemmy.world and lem.ee, but the leftists are a scrappy bunch so they’ll respond in kind and mostly from hexbear; hence the defederations.

People frown upon lemmy.world because it’s a politically American center-right instance on a leftist social media platform that bans leftist discourse via defederation.

If your politics align w them and you don’t mind them deciding what you can and can’t see on your behalf, you’ll do fine there.

I switched from lemmy.world because of that and switched to an instance that doesn’t make a habit of defederating from the most active instances (ie hexbear) and there’s also another center-right instance named lemm.ee that also doesn’t defederate.

  • I can speak on immigrants from Central America because we sponsored 7 families (aunts & uncles) growing up and I ended up going to school w my cousins who didn’t speak English.

They did REALLY well in science, math, physics, biology, history & sociology because the schools that they came from had significantly higher standards, so they coasted until the American students caught up to them years later; but did poorly w literature, English, social studies, & civics for obvious reasons. (I grew up in small town USA and the racist teachers tried to fail some of them, but couldn’t since their excellent grades in the hard sciences made up for their failure grades in the soft sciences). (They also got into more fights at school by the racist bullies).

They were young enough so that they were completely fluent in English by the time they graduated high school and I hope that I likewise can become fluent in Spanish when I emigrate after the American fascists ruin everything.

  • In the case of “frequently defederated”? Or in General?

    both. lol

i think it’s a symptom of the sensibilities of genz clashing with older generations; sort of like millennials clashing with boomers but to a MUCH more significant degree.

Looking at FediDB (which seems a little broken), it seems like Lemmy.World is tripling their monthly posts.

you can see how well above it’s weight hexbear is punching when it comes to active users; communities like slop, badposting, and chapotraphouse in particular.
