  • Timd to update your criteria, friend. Seagate hasn’t been top of the failure stack for like 8 years now. The 3TB scandal era is long since passed. Now it’s WD who has been shitting on quality control, sending out faulty SSD’s that wipe user data, bait-and-switching HDD customers with a cheaper, much worse performing technology (SMR) WITHOUT TELLING THEM, them basically blowing corporate raspberries at everyone when people complain.

While i agree they were the best, HGST also hasn’t even existed as a non-WD product for years…

  • With the preface of “cheap”, do not ever buy a laptop under $500. They are simply underspecced by the time they get that low, and will give a bad experience.

I would also recommend something like a Lenovo ThinkPad, they are pretty damn tough. Maybe a ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Intel. Spec it out to 16gb of memory and even the i3 processor will get your job done fine in Linux, while landing in under $650. Plus they have removable M.2 SSD’s that can be changed out for a higher capacity very easily, and much much cheaper than the $300 they charge to kit it with a 1tb drive…

  • but if your home is uninhabitable, insurance should pay for any accomodations while you are waiting for your home to be fixed.

Bold of you to assume that any insurance company will keep operating in wildfire interface areas within the next 5 years. They’ve already been cancelling tens of thousands of policies in California over it and it’s coming to your area next.

Reminder that insurance companies are in the business of collecting premiums, not paying out coverage. They will fuck you over at a moment’s notice no matter how long you’ve paid into their system.

  • I was already entertaining the idea of a Lemmy switch after they announced the imminent death of my beloved RiF. Lemmy was mentioned many many times in the 3rd party app threads discussing the api changes.

They went ahead and hastened my transition by permabanning me (and two of my alts) for “report abuse” since I dared to regularly report all the obvious spam bots that filled so many subs. Meh. I could have made more alts but really just didn’t give a fuck at that point. Sure hope Spez’s pedo ass enjoys his already failing IPO.
