  • After many careers and much money earned and spent, I now try to go by „ikigai“. Its a japanese theory and teaches you to be aware of what it is that you want, what makes you money, what the world needs and what you‘re good at, basically. This is how I went from a very well paid but soul sucking job to a lesser paid but much more fulfilling work.

For me it was building computers and the stuff around it. Its fun and it makes decent money if done right.

    Good luck!

  • I think this is the case, yes. From my pov the technical ability to block others and defederate leads to this left leaning trend. This is the only place I know that is really left leaning.

But the important part here is: the distinction between left and right is arbitrary. There is no left and right. There are certain beliefs and ideas which usually get attributed towards left or right.

The idea of freedom - in most of the world - isnt really left or right, or at least used to be.

Especially the fascist turn of the us, the fascist turn of germany and others are a sign of the world turning, not lemmy.

Because freedom, flow of ideas and identity are still typical topics on lemmy. Same as they used to be. I think the right wing nuts just left since they are more welcome on xitter and fascbook.

Is that good for critical discourse? No. Can we change it? No idea. Should we change it? No idea.

  • I understood that. Sorry if that wasnt clear.

What I‘m saying is please (who can) consider asking and paying people for implementing this stuff.

For example: voice chat in discord (or any) bridges isnt implemented because it is a lot of work but it is doable.

Consider making a gofundme for paying someone to do it if you cant afford it yourself.

One reason why open source is far behind prorietary stuff (foss can be commercial, see nextcloud) is because people keep thinking anything in life is actually free.

There is no such thing as free lunch. If you‘re getting free software it is because someone donated their time to make it.

In case of discord: make an issue on the mautrix bridges for example and add a financial incentive if you can so people can afford to make this for you. Good luck :)

  • No problem.

I can see how one would struggle to use these bridges. They‘re not polished yet. Have you donated to the maker yet? Because people keep comparing stuff that people make for free in their free time to multi million dollar priducts.

We should all either put in work or money before we allow ourselves to judge these apps. I personally spend 1% of my income additionally to helping the development.

  • Maybe it was silently assumed but nobody so far mentioned the endless stream of scrapers that go through my probably juicy but private instance. I‘m banning a new bot every week and by now they have switched to distributed actions. I get over 400 requests per hour by a couple ips for the same stuff with changing useragents because I wrote automated detection mechanisms. I might just make my instance login only.

  • You will probably get the best answers from the peertube community so I suggest you crosspost your question there.

That said, I host a peertube instance. It is the same as any other fediverse service but it is very young so dont expect it to be on par with mastodon and lemmy in terms of usability.

As with all other services, you can make an account on an instance, seeing only what that instance allows you to, either by specifically allowing or disallowing other servers.

So if you want the user experience, check joinpeertube.org for a rather well connected (and or maybe large) instance and join if you want to upload content. If not, you can just use your mastodon account to follow creators or comment on their videos.

If you want freedom to do as you please, you need to get a server that is online (as in not in your home network or at least exposed but treat with caution). You can then install a peertube instance of your own, ideally with a custom domain. Then you can join the network and federate with who and whatever you like.

In any case, framatube is a great company imo but their marketing just isnt that good. Peertube has so much potential and it could be further along by now.

But dont get me wrong. It is still great and here to stay.

    Good luck.

  • Well, reading up on the modlog, the things that were removed were riddled with rhetoric. Try to leave the judgement out of your words and you‘ll probably have a better time.

Even the post you made to complain about it is problematic. Not everyone here is a native english speaker. Even those might not have the will to read through your four line long sentence.

Also, me joining the apple fanbois club and telling them why apple is not great just does not make sense. Same goes for veganism or any other thing people like. Critical discussions are for the broader fields, not the „fan convention“.
