So “Open Source” to AI is just releasing a .psd file used to export a jpeg, and you need some other proprietary software like Photoshop in order to use it.

If I chose it for gratis, I wouldn’t have replaced Windows with it.

I do all my work inside WSL anyway. I only use Windows at work because that’s what IT gave me. They also offer macbooks.

People probably confuse it with tools like cp, rm, ls, etc as they use -r for file recursion.

chmod -r uses symbolic mode. Specifically it removes read permissions for the file. Other forms include w for write and x for executable. + can be used to add permission.

Expectation: apply chmod to all subdirectories.

Reality: Remove read permission

For chmod, chown, chattr, etc, -R is used to recurse subdirectories.

Reminder that Microsoft uses the MIT license because it lets them do separate proprietary releases. They do this with vscode and release proprietary extensions that only work with the proprietary version of vscode, like pylance.

It’s not all bad, but just be aware this is what they do.

In fact, it recommends installing Linux on top of Windows via WSL or a virtual machine. It explicitly recommends not installing Linux on bare metal because of hardware compatibility.
