I totally agree with this. The only reason why I have hardware (some original and a multi-console-in-one) is because I stream as a hobby in Japan and the general public doesn’t have a positive view on emulation.

Iirc it’s 0 gravity as well.
What was so different about it compared to now? I only played SFV online.
I got the retrofreak with the master system attachment a few months ago. I’m looking online for a copy of Phantasy Star as we speak! I was a huge fan of PSO (only the first one, the sequel feels like a cheap enshittified knockoff), so I’ve always wanted to know more about its original games.

I was well-aware by the time I played OoT that NPC were just NPCs, but I think I felt the same bewilderment as you did when I first played Shenmue. I haven’t played in a long time so I’m not sure if it still holds up, but at the time, that world made me feel like the NPCs were real people with actual lives.

When you say Mark III was the Master System in the West, do you mean the Japanese Master System (which is the Mark III with its peripherals built-in)? Or was the OG Mark III called Master System in the West? This is all so confusing, haha. But I’m looking at the Japanese SEGA website and it’s starting to make a lot more sense. Super interesting stuff.

I notice the product says master system II. Is that backwards compatible with I? Was II a big jump in tech like from PSX to PS2? Also, is Mark III the third iteration of the master system?
I’ve only touched Sega after the Genesis/Megadrive so their history is kind of a mystery to me.

I loved this game. I’m surprised it never got a sequel afaik.

I really appreciate this comment. Your opinions are grounded and also respectful in that you don’t insult what has come to be known as one of the worst NES games.
I wonder if there are ROM hacks that address any of the issues you mentioned.

This reminds me of the time a guy had a police standoff with one of those in Brazil.

My life revolved around PSO and PSO BB back in high school and university. I’ve been meaning to play the original series, so thanks for reminding me! I’m eyeing a copy of Phantasy Star on the Mark III on Mercari right now…

Thanks so much! I’ll go check out my local used second-hand shop for these.

Can I piggyback on this post? What are some good RPGs for the megadrive/genesis? I like to live translate games as I stream them and I’m looking for some text-heavy games, but it seems like the Super Famicom/SNES had a near-monopoly on RPGs.

Nintendo games have helped my kids with their reading because they still won’t put voice acting.

It’s フェニックスの尾. Technically, it’s the “tail” of a phoenix, but it’s clearly depicted as the “tail feather”.

I bought a Retro Freak I play the old games I could never buy/beat as a kid. Played my first PC Engine game ever just the other day!
I really appreciate older creators who are calmer when they talk. I don’t need people telling and screaming all the time.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve never seen this guy’s videos before but it was genuinely enjoyable.
Do you mean from the panel where she’s putting the mits on to the part where she’s showing them? Then, yeah, since we also write top to bottom in a vertical line, we can also go from bottom to top when going to the next line.
Another commenter says the mangaka screwed up, but I don’t agree. Japanese writing is chaotic, so this manga is pretty conventional. Here’s what we have to deal with when it comes to reading the news paper.

The text within the fuchsia line is one article. You start reading from the green line — top to bottom, left to right. You’d think it would keep going that way until the left edge of the paper, but for some reason, they decided to put a second article, so the green paragraph’s height is cut in half. Then we start the yellow paragraph and you’d think the article is done when it reaches the left edge of the green paragraph, but nope, there’s one more paragraph starting from the blue arrow.
Majora’s Mask too, I think.
