They do it to protect their feelings. They’ve normalized the use of something most people hate, so they want everyone else to adopt it, too. That way, they won’t feel judged, when they 100% deserve to feel judged.

I very rarely use the downvote arrow, because I know it upsets people. “Why” doesn’t matter to me. Lemmy is (mostly) a friendly place, and I want it to stay that way.

When I was a kid, an anchor on a major network news program called mosquitos “flying hypodermic needles”. This was at the height of the AIDS epidemic. It absolutely terrified me.

I was just old enough to understand what the anchor was talking about, but too young to know that the TV news was often exaggerated and should be treated with skepticism. I’m still kinda bitter about that. Scaring the fuck out of a kid is NOT okay.

Fortunately, some therapists charge on a “sliding scale”. That means the therapist charges depending on what you’re able to pay. Money isn’t necessarily an insurmountable barrier.
