The $193 million figure is misleading because the majority of it is stock, so that number isn’t cash and is just an estimate of value since there isn’t even an open market for the stock. The IPO will show how much it’s really worth I guess.
He was paid a little over a mil in actual salary + bonus, which is still too much but not nearly as ridiculous.
I do agree with Ada in broad strokes. The Fedipact is just a petition. Meta doesn’t care if you sign it. And it’s not binding either—you can sign it and end up changing your mind and federating anyway, or you can defederate without signing it (like Blahaj).
It’s still interesting data though. It may not represent every instance’s stance on Meta, but it does reflect the stances of those that sign, and suggest that they’re more active in the discourse.
You’re right on the money with it being about admins and not users, too. Users aren’t even allowed to sign it, only mods and admins can.
It’s hard to extrapolate too much just from this data, I think.
That said, my read on it: Mastodon is way bigger than any other fedi platform, and with popularity comes outsiders to fedi culture and politics and people who just don’t care. Also, a lot of the big instances want to federate because they have more of a growth mindset, so they when they see Meta they just see more potential users.
It’s interesting though that Mastodon is the platform that would be most affected by federation. We here on Lemmy don’t have great interoperability with the microblog side of the fediverse, so we’re less likely to see Threads activity.
It’s kind of ironic taking a project that’s already written in Rust and writing a replacement for it in Java.
Usually things get ported to Rust, not the other way around.

You’re right that the post is badly written, because it just sorta says “this is a place that promotes paraphilia!” But in this particular case, this server hosts reprehensible content and is not just a community for kinky people that happens to have pedos on it.
It’s like if there were a knife enthusiast instance where the largest local community was about committing crime, where the admin self-identifies as being into commiting crimes. It’s absolutely true most knife enthusiasts have no interest in committing crime, and therefore the knife enthusiasts who don’t want to commit crime probably wouldn’t join the server that promotes crime.
The analogy falls apart a bit because it’s true that they’re not doing anything illegal over there, at least not publicly. But they’re still promoting viewing kids sexually, promoting sexual contact with kids, even talking about nude photos of kids.
The HTTP protocol isn’t really the problem, I2P uses HTTP same as the clearnet. It’s just the fact that I2P is a closed network, so anything hosted on I2P will only federate with other instances on I2P—which as far as I’m aware, is none of them.
Having similar issues with Quad9. I even had an odd issue today where I could ping 9.9.9.9 just fine, but dig @9.9.9.9 would time out. That suggested to me that it’s an issue with their DNS server specifically, and not the network. I didn’t get around to trying from another host, but I think it’s less likely to have to do with Comcast specifically as you simply connecting to a different anycast server.
The issues are only intermittent for me, they’ll come and go. Right now I can resolve against 9.9.9.9 just fine, but who knows how long that’ll last until issues crop up again. I had to switch DoH providers temporarily, hopefully everything will be resolved soon.

The devs don’t stop anyone from running their own instance, like most of the Fediverse they just won’t federate their own instances with hateful ones.
I feel like this would be spotted and stamped out immediately. Everyone’s eyes are on Threads right now; astroturfed content might sneak in on Mastodon, where regular Threads content will be mixed in with the hypothetical astroturfed content, but here on Lemmy there will be little to no Threads presence due to lack of interoperability, so every single Threads account that shows up will be noticed. It’s already super visible when Mastodon users show up due to the weird formatting issues that happen due to the lack of support.
I just don’t see an astroturf campaign as being viable unless Threads implements community functionality, which seems pretty far out when they’re only now implementing basic federation with Mastodon.
