4·2 years agoI just spoke to somebody who asks $2200 labor and $1800 materials for a new door/frame

91·2 years agoHe’s the one who suggested using putty in the first place. I had another person who quoted me $675 for cutting and replacing wood in the affected areas with PVC. Does that sound better? That does not include caulking or painting the whole door though.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If I'm over 25, is it still too late for me to "learn" French or can I just watch French sitcoms for like a year and be up-to-speed?
4·2 years agoThat sounds really interesting! Thanks for that link.

7·2 years agoWhat I’ve found to be helpful is to not learn the words first, but rather learn the sentence formation, and find parallels in your own language. Understanding sentence structure would really help in learning the language, and you can always substitute unknown words with English until you learn them. See how a sentence in your language is translated to that language, and see how the structure is different. Building parallels like this for different types of sentences would really help you learn the language better.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
1·3 years agoHe’s a good candidate too, but to me, John Oliver has come to be associated with Reddit revolts in the media, because he was flooding the front page for a while. Even major news outlets wrote about it. If he does an ama here, it would symbolically show that those people have moved on to Lemmy.

2·3 years agoI think it would be a definite boost to the fediverse, because a major talking point I see in reddit discussions is that there is no viable alternative to reddit, so people are going to stay no matter what. This event would put a big spotlight on lemmy, and if it goes well, will result in a lot of regular users from reddit.

It’s running windows 10. The software code project ai supports gpus with cuda support, which I assume are Nvidia cards. I’m using it currently only for blue iris to monitor my security cameras. Blue iris uses code project ai for object detections like human, animals, etc. It has been running okay for a couple of years without GPU, but I think adding a GPU would definitely improve performance and speed.
