You might be better off looking for a community where the moderation optimizes for that kind of discussion (ex. Removing low effort comments, requiring citations, academic oriented, etc). It’s harder to find an entire instance that matches those points, but there should be a few communities like that
Then you can use the subscribed feed only, or block the communities you don’t like

Mainly moderation. If a community or space is intended for a particular group, it’s perfectly fine to moderate how you see fit. If it is meant to be a general space, try to limit political biases when moderating and focus on bad faith comments.
If a post/comment was in good faith, it’s more effective to let someone explain why it is wrong rather than removing it. Chances are that others can learn from the explanation (or that they were correct to begin with, and you’ll learn something)

The benefits are easy, I can’t think of many drawbacks. Maybe:

I once won a promotion and I was sent some items for free. When I went to pick them up, I had to pay more than I would have been willing to pay if I bought the items, because of ‘duties and taxes’.
I probably should have just refused the delivery, but I was young and didn’t know any better so I paid for my package. There was a receipt inside the box that listed the items as being somewhat expensive, so I assumed there was some weird accounting where I still had to pay the taxes despite getting them for free.
I’ve bought and shipped a lot of items since then without ever having to pay upon pickup.

It’s still too soon to tell what they will do. It’s totally possible that they will take the necessary steps to be properly decentralized by transferring control of the registry + protocol to an independent non profit.
Right now I feel that they don’t have much of an incentive to do that, since the vast majority of their users won’t care.
