I was thinking the same thing. It’s the window frame I think, it’s like strip inside the strip.

Actually I’m not sure. Usually a beat panel is the second to last with no action in it at all. But in this one both middle panels have an action (the car going by and then Calvin & Hobbs running) but the framing with action outside the window isolates us just the right amount to still feel like a beat is being taken between the action of the car disaster and moms realisation.
I imagine if I was drawing this I’d have had the car and Calvin both go by in the second panel and the third just being mom thinking. But Watterson such a great artist he can create that feeling of a moment of stillness without it really being there.
This is one of my favourite C&H strip. The beat panel just kills me.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are your favorite fun facts about animals?
39·6 days agoCheetah’s went through a genetic bottleneck somewhere between ten and twelve thousand years ago. There may have been less than ten left at one point. Dating the Cheetah Genetic Bottleneck
My totally silly theory is that humans in fact where adopting kits at that time and help saved the species, and that’s why they’re so almost domesticated.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is everyone doing to survive this food inflation?
2·17 days agoWhat’s your personal situation? For me I’ve got good freezer space, so a slow cooker and a bunch of freezer safe containers made for a really good investment. A slow cooker lets you use a lot of cheaper cuts of meat like beef chuck and chicken thighs, as well as making the cooking of beans and stews much easier. But it does tend to make larger portions then I need at a go, so I need to food prep and freeze a lot of stuff. On the other hand that allows me to buy in bulk, cook it all up and then freeze it. I tend to have like four to eight copies of a dozen different meals in our freezer so that does take up a lot of space.

I’m a little worried that no one has mentioned Mystery Inc. yet. It’s probably the best version of Scooby-Doo ever done.
Also look in to Clone High both the 2002 version and the 2023 restart. It’s a really fun show more for teenagers and the blueprint that Total Drama Island ripped off. It’s also the very first time Miller and Lord, of Spider-verse and Hail Merry fame, got to run a show.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the fantasy book/series everyone should read?
10·2 months agoVery much Discworld. I shouldn’t have had to scroll this far down to find this shame on all y’all. The Night Watch series and The Witches series are my favourites and I do recommend reading series’s in order to but you can start practically anywhere if you want. Just remember the very first two books aren’t anyone’s favourites but are still good.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is that one software that you are using for 10 years and still loving it?
5·2 months agoKodi/XBMC - a little over 20 years ago I jailbroke my old X-Box gen 1 and after about a week I installed XBMC (X-Box Media Center), which was about 2 years old. I just was looking for a way to save space because I could fit a whole season of a show as AVIs on a single burned DVD and XBMC could be used to play it. 20 years and a name change later it’s still my TV front end. I’ve moved from a jailbroke X-Box to a Linux based media center PC but I still automatically boot to Kodi which plays anything I throw at it, keeps track of all the shows and movies I’ve watched, is front end for playing retro games and spawns Steam if I needed all off MCE remote and a Xbox controller to game with.
