I use the FUTO keyboard. The “AI” features that it includes are local-only predictive text and voice-to-text (both are very good, in my experience). It’s not open source, and neither is GrayJay (another FUTO project), which is a yellow flag, at minimum.

At the same time, they do fund open source projects, most notably Immich, which is a fantastic Google Photos alternative. I’m personally okay with using their stuff, and tentatively happy with them as an organization, but I’m keeping a watchful eye on their behavior.

That is a non-commercial license, so it is not open source.

I use Cloudflare and I had to disable their proxy to get Matrix federation to work. No clue if it can work using their tunnel.

Yeah, unfortunately the display/esp32 can now only be purchased pre-flashed from specific retailers (for a significant markup) and the firmware is no longer published anywhere. The only way to update is OTA.

It’s all really shitty. Though, I’ll admit, I really didn’t have high hopes when I found out that they use discord for everything from troubleshooting to documentation to group buys.

I bought the parts to build mine a year ago and never got around to it. I’ll still build it, but it’s sad they are either ripping away all potential future support, are fracturing the community, or both

On a related note, open source projects that get big without a reliable leadership organizational structure risk burning down just as easily.

Recently nix, wordpress, and gaggiuino were affected by this kind of thing. Nix seems to be recovering. Wordpress doesn’t look good. Gaggiuino skipped right over source-available and went closed-source.

Linux is a success story with this structure, but I think we need to be better about building projects with stability in mind.

I need both threads and spaces, which limits my options. I use Element web on my PCs. On my phone, I am forced to use Schildichat because the Element app slows to a crawl after a couple days of use.

They’re funded by a parent organization with a crypto coin, and they explicitly state hosting AI models as one of their main goals. No thanks.

Also, just a sidenote, while AlphaFold2 training data is available for download (unsure if AlphaFold3 will follow suit), the OSI recently released its definition for open source AI models, and there is no requirement that the training data needs to also be open for a model to be considered “open source”, which is extremely disappointing and will degrade the meaning of open source.

I use it as second monitor, so I don’t game on it. Now that I think about it, though, it might be fun to play gameboy or DS emulators on it.
