No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Disregarding current event, why was it always said if you eat Taco Bell your going to have the burning shits or something? I've eaten it for years and nothing even happened.
4·14 days agoWait, another comment said it’s because it’s high in fibre. Seems like it’s a meme that nobody actually knows why, or even experiences it?

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•map of world with antarctica at center
4·19 days agoOn a similar vein, this is why I like the Dymaxion map so much; it shows more clearly how the landmasses are connected and better illustrates how early people migrated and settled where they did.

First thought: “why are they holding their baby like that?”
After scrolling down: “oh”
That’s a crane fly. They have lots of nicknames and folk identities so it’s super common to call them something else. I’ve heard them called “mosquito hawks” (they don’t hunt mosquitoes) but male mosquitoes is a new one to me. You could add it to the Wikipedia page lol
So I’d consider myself a very amateur entomologist so am very open to being wrong here, but that’s not a thing to my knowledge; if anything, the males tend to be smaller. You might be seeing two different species, or are misidentifying another insect for a male mosquito.
Crane flies are significantly larger than mosquitoes and don’t swarm. Swarms near a lake are very typical of midges who look superficially like mosquitoes.
No, the feathery antennae is a way to tell males and females apart, not species. Male mosquitoes have feathery antennae, and so do males of many other fly and even other insect species.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What hot af take do you have that you think you will be HORRIBLY executed and shunned from society for?
61·2 months agoNah, the general public doesn’t have the time or patience to properly research this stuff or consult the experts. They’ll just vote on vibes and we’ll just be trading one kind of bad for another.
Keep representatives, just don’t elect them. Sortition is the best of both worlds; you still get a sample of the population, but with people who take the responsibility seriously and actually have the time to do the research/due diligence.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's with black superheroes and lightning powers?
5·3 months agoMiles Morales is an interesting example of the trope though, as the other spider-heroes don’t have the electrical powers while he does.
On Spider-Man, Electro isn’t black in the comics but was in Amazing Spider-Man which is also maybe a hint of the trope.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•We need a word for "literally" that doesn't also mean "not literally"
8·3 months agoI’m fine with descriptivism on theory, but it sure seems wrong in the cases where the word changes meaning due to people misunderstanding/misusing the word. That’s not a a word gaining a new meaning, it’s losing meaning.
The other one I need a replacement for is “begs the question” since so many people have misused that one too.

It could be worse
