No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's with black superheroes and lightning powers?
5·1 month agoMiles Morales is an interesting example of the trope though, as the other spider-heroes don’t have the electrical powers while he does.
On Spider-Man, Electro isn’t black in the comics but was in Amazing Spider-Man which is also maybe a hint of the trope.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•We need a word for "literally" that doesn't also mean "not literally"
8·1 month agoI’m fine with descriptivism on theory, but it sure seems wrong in the cases where the word changes meaning due to people misunderstanding/misusing the word. That’s not a a word gaining a new meaning, it’s losing meaning.
The other one I need a replacement for is “begs the question” since so many people have misused that one too.

Mountain air is pretty great.
Also a big fan of the smell of allspice. I remember as a child climbing on the kitchen counter to reach the spice cabinet so I could crack that jar and get a good whiff.

Nah, the general public doesn’t have the time or patience to properly research this stuff or consult the experts. They’ll just vote on vibes and we’ll just be trading one kind of bad for another.
Keep representatives, just don’t elect them. Sortition is the best of both worlds; you still get a sample of the population, but with people who take the responsibility seriously and actually have the time to do the research/due diligence.
