I hope NVK can one time surpass the current nvidia driver, at least for the needs of a basic (possibly gaming oriented) linux user.
Nvidia simply does not care about that and it doesn’t seem like it will change anytime soon.
That’s not as true as it’s been : they’ve published kernel modules as opensource. It’s clearly not perfect nor comparable to what AMD or Intel do/did, but it’s way better than when Linus raised that finger ;)
they’ve published kernel modules as opensource moved everything to proprietary firmware blobs that used to be in drivers to make an “open source” version, unethically (and arguably illegally) used a GPL condom to avoid kernel taint, and in the enterprise space are jacking up prices and pushing “cloud” stuff just because they can.
