Good for them. Our prison system needs to be abolished
I’m going to go out on a limb here and ask, “why can’t inmates have a computer?”
I mean, if it’s not hooked up to the Internet, who cares? It’s not a dangerous weapon. It’s basically a fancy book and writing device. Maybe some games.
If prisoners are looking at porn and playing offline computer games why does that matter? They’re not out in society committing crimes. They’re just entertaining themselves with harmless activities.
I guess I’m firmly in the camp of, “the reason to put someone in prison is because they couldn’t behave out in society” (for whatever reason/crime). Not to torture them with boredom for n months/years.
If someone is a career criminal, I have zero faith in the system to “reform” them. It assumes there’s something wrong with them that needs to be fixed. When everyone knows that there’s loads of people in prison that don’t belong there. That are absolutely zero danger to society.
IMHO, a “reformed” prisoner is one that was never going to be commit the same crimes again anyway. When the system makes such claims it’s just patting itself on the back, trying to justify its existence.
Example: Like we’re going to “reform” someone who got addicted to pain killers. As if it was a simple behavioral problem.
The problem is that some exploitative company couldn’t profit from their misery this way. Lots of prisons have computer labs with pay per minute access. If the prisopners can just browse freely then how will the CEO of CCA buy his next gold plated yacht?
Prison with a decent computer with Factorio. Sign me up.

The new thing is tablets. Little walled gardens where you can pay-per-message (email or text). Browse the Internet with pay per minute access(typically whitelist). Watch some videos, listen to music, or read an ebook (rentals or ppv) and they usually have some shitty games as well.

In America there is a disgustingly large amount of people who believe it is what should happen in prison.
It’s also never about rehabilitation, it’s becoming more and more about private prison profits and cheap/free labor. I have absolutely no faith whatsoever in our
injustice system. :(‘Free labor’ has a name. It’s called slavery.
Some documentaries show they do and TVs. The sheriff commented saying rather the inmates using them. They are great distraction devices. If they can stare at a screen most the time and avoid fighting. A PC isnt the worse of their worries they got smartphone devices the size of a plum
In this case though it was hooked up to the internet. They found it because the amount of internet traffic was suspiciously high.
Someone should give them a phone…they’ll go to Facebook and will be addicted to it.

It’s odd that a prison that was careful enough to track internet activity on a contractor’s account, had a blocking proxy server, and had alerts for daily internet usage thresholds had a random unsecured wired “internet connection device”.
