I guess I kind of understand why companies want you to be logged in to engage with their platform, as the user metrics are the main selling point to advertisers, but man do I really fucking hate it when a platform forces me to log in by preventing me from using their website. So much so, that I haven’t made an account on Instagram or X or Facebook or whatever dumb social media platform specifically because I can’t browse without signing up. Well, that, and also the greed, the lack of privacy, the tacit endorsement of fascism, et. cetera.
No, I don’t want to make an account.
No, I don’t want to download your app.
No, I don’t want to turn on notifications.
Gah, fuck off with all this horseshit. The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.
The big problem is most people say “Ugh, fine, I’ll log in with Google,” rather than you and I who say “Ugh, no.”
log in with google is way worse. now you are sharing your data with both Google and Reddit
Emphatically agree, but “normies” gonna “normie.”
Convenience is the primary goal for them.
I don’t have a problem with someone making a website for logged in users only. What sucks is making this open anonymous forum that was quite good for years and then locking it down once people are addicted to it. Well, this doesn’t change much for me i deleted my reddit years ago and haven’t been back at all.
Same same, it’s fucked
The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.
I mean, that’s capitalism. It was inevitable. A similar fate will befall Lemmy at some point, so enjoy it while you can.

press x to doubt.
Seriously, there’s a low chance for that.
- lemmy is not a service but an open source software
- public lemmy services are ran like a “public service”, for the benefit of the public. an instance cannot just lock down its access to users without exiting the federation. and if it exits the federation, it will become worthless basically, as they’ll lose all the external content. yes lemmy.ml and lemmy.world are too big, which is a problem, but I don’t think they could pull it off easily either.
- lemmy developers are loudly marxist, they oppose capitalism. so both the software itself, and the lemmy.ml instance are unlikely to change in the way you tell
It’s quite a shame that the vast majority would rather stay on a platform that hates its users than come here, but I guess that’s how humanity works
I think many people just don’t know about Lemmy and all its wonders
Beans and milk
Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.
It’s becoming a “fuck this I’m going somewhere else” experience.
I just came here from there. Reddit is getting weird AF
Me too. It started with subreddits going to shit because half of the content were repost bots recycling older posts.
Then, it started asking for an ID to be able to interact with subreddits and users with the NSFW label activated.
And now it’s a only logged experience. The platform is on a spiral of enshittification at the same time it puts more barriers to be part of it.
Welcome. You come to find a more free alternative… You stay for the beans, powdered milk, and art.
Nearly 20 years on Reddit. I survived the Digg Wars, API/RiF fiasco, and the infiltration of bots.
But I am so done with the anti-user direction Reddit has gone. So here I am.
The API thing is what did it for me, glad youre done with them!
You can’t even find news on reddit anymore. Who gives a shit.
Unfortunately I give a shit because I don’t want to have to resort to using an LLM to get an answer to the many obscure questions I have that are rarely answered anywhere else.
I think LLMs are a great tool for searching through lots of information. I just think their monopolization and monolithical mass adoption is bad. The people who run them are bad. The scale at which they do it is bad. The dangers are very real and bad.
But they’re great at sifting through and collating information. Private ones are great. The tech is awesome. The current implementation is problematic. Like we got nuclear energy and atom bombs at the same time. This is that.
Understandable but resorting to Reddit in its current state (with current leadership) is probably worse
That’s what LLMs are great at. With search MCPs they can quickly look through data and hand you a source to answer your question.
I’m aware and that’s the problem. Using LLMs makes me feel guilty because of the resource waste.
I do it locally. Even a local LLM can be super useful in that situation.
Have you noticed the news being watered down too? Like I’m seeing some real news here and there mixed with way more stupid fluff pieces in r /news the past year or 2.
inb4 lemmy always sucked
yup. an its almost impossible to find anything on ukraine or iran unless you are outright looking for it.
They are going to end up burning the whole thing to the ground in a bid to make investors money on something that never had hard quantifiable monetary value to begin with in a way that you could easily turn up the dial on “line go up” enshitification like Google can with ad impressions.
Its a fancy web forum, a big popular one for sure, but there are God knows how many similar options out there already competing for users. There is a very low ceiling on just how profitable it could ever be as a business all on its own.
There is a reason a lot of these websites, like Gamespot for example, ended up consolidating into holding companies that own a bunch of them.
According to FediDB there has been a 1.7% growth this month. Meaning 244,051 new accounts have been created on fediverse on the past 30days. Almost 250thousand people in a month. I’m sure this is completely coincidental
It hurt itself in its confusion.
Reddit is killing itself on live
oh well.
Anyway.
yep, they’ve been turning up the dial for some time now …slowly implementing anti-mobile browsing nags and locking down content by classification. And good on them, nothing will ruin their run faster than their own enshittification efforts.
I feel like reddit will eventually become like Facebook in that only lame people will still use it, but it will be a big enough percentage that it’s going to be unavoidable in a very annoying way.
Unfortunately… But yeah, you’re likely right… I can see it going that way.
It’s annoying, because so much of the Internet is linked through Reddit. If I’m not constantly seeing these links, I can just pretend it doesn’t exist. Instead, I’m peppered with links to the Walled Garden, fully knowing I’m not allowed inside
Get ready for the next influx of new users here.
People will sign up for lemmy because they don’t want to sing up for reddit?
Lemmy gets new blood every time Reddit further enshitifies its experience.
I wonder if this will be the last reddit exodus, I don’t know how they can enshittify further so I imagine those that remain are pretty complacent.
Maybe don’t hand out bans like a single old lady on Halloween. I got banned for saying we need to punch all Nazis.
I can log and read a source for some tech help, then leave immediately. If you want engagement, unban everyone and return to the wild west.
Investors won’t have that!
Gotta be “”“advertiser friendly”“”…
… Even if that means “human unfriendly”
Shareholders ruin everything they get ahold of.
