3·5 days agoI joined Matrix today, It’s been 4-5 hours, I’ve seen multiple other users joining aswell, asking for what client is the best one or how to do X. For sure a lil exodus is happening.

1·5 days agoI use a handful of reddits, usually a few of those lewd ones for like hooking over over voice chat and stuff, kinda fun for that ig, but like as you said, most people there are kinda dumb, most conversations I have there are bland, boring, and end in a day or two at most with ghosting. (met a few cool people tho, its just like… 5% of all the ones I talk to)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think homeless people are responsible for the situation they are in?
2·6 days agoI’ll say something stupid here, are drunk driving accidents just because the guy was slightly drunk or because he wasn’t skilled enough at driving? I’d bet an f1 driver could survive driving on a regular neighborhood off skill alone, while a regular person could prob crash and burn. I think being homeless is the same as drinking alcohol while driving, the alcohol being the social difficulties/outside circumstances and then your personal skill in managing life/jobs. I think it’s both, but after you become homeless for a while, its harder to get back on track so you can spiral down and then it’s harder.

5·6 days agoAfter all the dumb changes to reddit and surveillance in general I decided to try and look for an alternative, If I knew it was this easy to get into lemmy I would’ve done it SO much sooner. Also i think this is my first day here? And every time I posted something I got a TON of responses, like I could argue even more attention than I would get on reddit, also the responses were better? Like what? How? There’s way less users here… Just imagine if Lemmy grew just a bit more, doesn’t need to beat reddit at all, just to grow a bit more (with good users ofc) That would be insane, Im having way more fun here already, the community is so much better, the only thing im missing/haven’t found yet, is those r4r reddit-like forums where you get to meet people to dm and stuff

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is javascript the most versatile programming language when it comes to building a wide variety of things?
2·6 days agoI appreciate the tip, I might end up on python, seems interesting and fast (to write not run lol)

1·6 days agoWhile it might not be the hardest part, I do feel it is a factor, so all things being equal i think it can help to choose a good first programming language that will help out the on-boarding process.

1·6 days agoI don’t really like mobile, even less with all the constant changes towards (more) mobile surveillance, i just included it as another versatility thing (in case i ever need to build mobile) but python can be used to build things with UI? like with a good way to write UI for your programs? I see python mostly on cli

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what is the thing you think the fediverse is not prepared for?
7·6 days agoI’ll second this, after distro hopping a bit at the beginning I ended up choosing Mint, it works and with i3 its like 500mb of idle ram, so far I haven’t found any reason to switch to a less user friendly distro, I don’t know what the advantages would be in using a more complicated/prone to breaking distro instead of mint. I’m open to switching though if I find something I like more, but Mint is amazing as a gateway drug distro, made coming over to linux SO much better, now I’m slowly infecting my family computers with mint aswell, gotta spread the virus

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is javascript the most versatile programming language when it comes to building a wide variety of things?
1·6 days agomhmm! that’s the basic rationale i had when trying to learn one general language at the beginning, It won’t be optimal but who cares? I’d rather be able to build more mediocre things broadly than only knowing one thing. Kinda how you start out with Ryu or Ken on street fighter games even if they are in the middle of the tierlist just because they have a bit of everything on their kit

2·6 days agoAs a newbie the quick visual feedback of building stuff on web is nice to have, but maybe I should do python instead with some kind of ui thing? I do want to end up working in tech I’d say asap but its not the “starving and i mean money right now” asap, but like, not wasting unnecessary time.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is javascript the most versatile programming language when it comes to building a wide variety of things?
1·6 days agoMhmm, but to start out i feel its best to focus in one programming language only, if under those parameters python/c (whatever c variant) are better than javascript, while it might be better in theory to use the right tool for the job, that takes way more time than doing everything with a less optimal more generalized tool (i think)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is javascript the most versatile programming language when it comes to building a wide variety of things?
2·6 days agoso python/c can be used for web/backend desktop gui apps, mobile apps and games? I’m not talking just about what’s the “best” language but the more versatile, also i haven’t included it, but speed of development (how long it takes to write the code for the programmer) is also a plus

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•lemmy users, how would we fund big tech alternatives, if targeted ads cannot be a thing?
6·7 days agoMicrodonations, I don’t feel one person consumes that much server resources (I FEEL I don’t know, the rest of the message lives off of this assumption) So like if you have 100.000 users paying 0,50 cents a month you have 50,000usd to pay for server costs, maybe it is expensive but I have a feeling it doesn’t cost 50k a month to support 100k users (talking more about lemmy or some social media like app not a live service for something like a videogame)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what is the thing you think the fediverse is not prepared for?
8·7 days agoI feel this is a good thing, kinda like linux, I got into it and I love it, at the beginning I wanted for linux to grow and grow in popularity to become huge and widely used, but then i realized this would also mean being on the sights of the big corporations controlling the market right now and goverments, and it may start to get regulated more or some bullshit they will cook up to hurt it and the people who use it to gain back the market share lost. I do want both linux and lemmy to grow more, but up to a point so they stay safe.
According to FediDB there has been a 1.7% growth this month. Meaning 244,051 new accounts have been created on fediverse on the past 30days. Almost 250thousand people in a month. I’m sure this is completely coincidental
