In the time we live in, all Onion article headlines could easily be real and all real headlines could be from the Onion.
Highlighting that is the idea.
At the Jewish holiday of Passover, as the story goes, the final act of God to convince the Egyptian Pharoah to free the Jewish slaves was to send an “angel of death” to slaughter all the first born children of the Egyptians. The Jews would be spared, or passed over.
I know you only asked if this headline was something of a joke, but I wanted to add a little context, maybe it’s relevant maybe it’s not. I think it is. I think it’s the kind of thinking that allows one to overlook these kinds of atrocities. Even call out others for their concern over your actions that are harming innocent people. Religion is cancer.
Have spent some time in Israel (born Jewish). It really seemed Israelis felt that because of the Holocaust, Jewish people had the right to do whatever they wanted to survive. Religion is cancer.
Wasn’t that the bit with sheep blood on the door frame? And that it didn’t make any difference whether Egyptian or Jewish, as long as they did that part?
Far as I recall, some Jewish families didn’t follow through and they weren’t spared. So it really wasn’t about saving the Jews, but rather converting followers and punishing those that disobeyed.

Yes, God is apparently unable to recognize his own chosen people and only reacts to the sight of blood*. Which would explain some other things in Bible and not only, for example make the infamous Beziers massacre quote “Kill them, for the Lord knows those that are His” demonstrably false.
*That reminds me of something, “Khorne cares not from where the blood flows, only that it flows without cease for all eternity”

Nah I have no beef with the mods. I crossposted there at someone else’s suggestion and when it was removed I was curious so I decided to ask Lemmy. I imagine modding a comm that big is hard work.
seems pretty on brand for the church, I would expect a post in not the onion to subvert expectations.
The article belongs but the headline could be phrased more oniony
Well, it is a two-sided war (as in, nobody is being innocent, strictly speaking). And the pope stepping in does come across as a bandwagon move. Whether it’s the intention or not, it also probably echoes old medieval biases. One might say it’s like the teacher who already doesn’t like you singling you out in an all-encompassing food fight.
It is not a two-sided war, it’s one-sided genocide.

It’s not even a war, let alone a two-sided war. It’s a genocide and series of crimes against humanity.

I guess it’s a David and Goliath sort of thing, but David got absolutely and desicively squashed again and again, and also his wife and kids.
Was this after David traumatized Goliath by raining fire on him and his home and blasting his medicine cabinet while blaming it on him?
History always has nuance. This is no exception.
In this comparison and scale, David’s attack would be like pinching Goliath.
But is Goliath really squashing David again and again, considering David is still there all in one piece? David has also crossed religions and asked Baba Yaga and Devadutta for weapons and manpower. As I said, it’s a dirty fight. I’m not wholly siding with either David or Goliath here, they would both be paying damages if this manifested as a legal trial.
If David is still in one piece, who are the tens of thousands that Goliath has murdered?
