The thing that saddens me isn’t a headline like that, it is that there will be more like him afterwards. :(

Turns out I just posted this further up the page with different wording. 🙃
There is someone who works a new stand. Everyday an elderly man walks up to the stand, looks at the news papers and the walks of in disgust.
Eventually the worker stops the old man and asks him “Why do you do that every day?”
The old man says “I am looking for a specific obituary.”
The worker says “But the obituaries are in the back on the new paper.”
The old man says “Not this one.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do we really want Lemmy's userbase to grow and assimilate "normies"?
1·5 days agoA thousand times this! It isn’t the popularity that is the issue, it is the economic model of exploitation.
I am in Melbourne, Australia, things are still ticking along fine enough BUT we can see the wave coming.
There was a book from 1957 called ‘On the beach’, it was about Melbourne being last city on Earth that has survived a nuclear war and how we would surcumb to the same fate as everyone else. It is starting to feel like that but in economic terms.
A few years back there was an ad campaign for a construction company, they put it on the side of buildings under construction, it merely said “Hey ChatGPT, finish this!”.
Find jobs they cannot automate and massage therapist is a great one. best of luck for the future from a random internet stranger.
I love and completely hate just how much of a dint Liz Truss did in for 40-something days. Made the history books in the worst way.

Regardless of how you heat water, you need water.

13·5 days agoA situations like this makes me use a form of Malapropism one would expect of a Dickensian society to bring about almost Orwellian situation. Makes you wonder when someone will use Chekhov’s Gun before it all gets Bowdlerized. Alas this Machiavellian paragraph is reminiscent of a Lovecraftian creature.
But seriously, that paragraph above reads like the scene in Blackadder when they meet the writer of the Dictionary.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•GXVK: 3Dfx Glide API Implemented Atop Vulkan For Modern UsageEnglish
2·5 days agoHaving a Glide wrapper is actually kind of neat from the developers perspective because it is basically a “Done” API with a fixed software base. I don’t think anyone is making new Glide code nowadays.
I say this because in the past there were projects to provide things like DirectX compatibility to Vulkan/OpenGL bY just doing a 1-to-1 API interpretation. That’s all well and good until you realize that a lot of games use the API in weird ways and that there are loads of driver side adaptions for Nvidia/AMD/Intel that exist outside the DX space. Early progress is no indicator of future progress.
But with Glide, no chance Turok 2 or Incoming is getting an update. You can account for any oddities that came up along the way.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is "open browsing"? And why is Reddit getting rid of it?
1·6 days agoI’m guessing they think it would be like Facebook where you need an account to see the bulk of it. But Facebook, Instagram has the whole “Talk to your friends and family” angle and Reddit doesn’t have that.
They are trying to build a moat. Yes, it can keep people in but it also stops new folks from coming in. This might be the Digg moment of Reddit but then we have heard that many times over the years in the past. It is probably just a long slow bleed.
