She can move silently about the house at night and sneak up on anyone.

She’s extremely agile and can climb things that her older siblings have difficulty with.

She’s a complete klepto

She’s completely fearless

And today she’s turned her attention to lock picking.

There I am taking a dump when I hear a rummaging sound from the lock of the bathroom door. Moments later I look up at her grinning and brandishing the pair of plastic sunglasses she used to gain entry to the bathroom.

Should I encourage this progression to a life of crime? She clearly has a talent for it. Or is there a more legal application of these talents?

    She can become a physical security pen tester, talk to her a lot about ethical testing. It might not seem like it’s making a difference right away, but consistent communication and learning will make a big difference before she becomes old enough to catch a felony charge.

    Lock picking, security system bypassing and the like will develop puzzle solving skills and thinking through problems. Look for some local locksport clubs for good resources on ethical lock picking and physical pen testing.

    Welcome to my world. My son has been like this since he was old enough to crawl and figured out he could bypass the cabinet locks by yanking really hard on them. So we had to buy magnetic child locks for everything. I tried a U type lock between cabinet doors once and he figured out he could unscrew the damn knob. Fast forward to today where I have RFID locks on the cabinets in my office, and the only fobs for them are in my desk which has a biometric lock on it.

    As others mentioned pen testing is huge. My son found a way to connect his Chromebook at school to every printer and started printing things all over campus. The IT department still hasn’t figured out how he was able to do it.

    It certainly has kept me on my toes. It’s like a game of cat and mouse now. He breaks in, I improve the security and on and on. I’ve honestly thought about getting certified in alarm installation and starting a business with him.
