I’ve noticed that there seems to be an emphasis on being extremely serious at all times, as if every single comment is a PhD dissertation being evaluated or something. There’s like this weird, subtle one upmanship about every little thing and a lot of people are very nitpicky and judgmental. It kind of takes the fun out of being on here, TBH. Or am I the only one experiencing this?
I don’t think you’re alone. I’m serious and occasionally judgemental on Lemmy, and if I am discussing something I care deeply to ensure the accuracy of my facts whenever I make a claim.
In contrast, on meme and shitpost communities, I’m a lot less serious and more of a jokester. My suggestion is it might be best for you to avoid the politics communities. Make some posts sharing your pics, arts and crafts, there is much less judgement (and for people that think it’s their job to judge your craft beyond helpful and constructive criticism, you should block).
Oh, also if you see a comment that is nested more than 6 times down, and it’s not the AskOuija community, it’s probably best to skip over reading all that, becuase it’s often two annoying users going at each other. They might be having fun, but there’s no need to get yourself involved.
Yes, quite a bit actually.
No
Everyone on every social media seems hostile these days. Maybe it’s a reflection of society’s anxiety?
Yes.
I took a screenshot from a yt video and asked a question about it. A Karen called me a shit for not cropping it. And another was pissed cuz I couldn’t know it’s AI generated.
I run a few coms so I notice the pedantic people, too. But on the whole I find most of the people I interact with to be pleasant and informative. For the rest, as long as they’re not being openly bigoted or hostile, I try to remember that I can’t tell tone from text.
I enjoy being here. One of the reasons I chose my instance was to be able to see everything and tailor my feed to suit me, so I accept I’m going to see everything.
oh yeah. just got through one of these. I am expected to obtain solid studies if i so much as go against the flow of popular opinions of which have had never had to be up against any scrutiny what so ever.
eg: vegans speaking on consciousness and how they believe it exists in the brain.
they speak about consiousness and it’s location like it has all been proven. They provide no papers. no proof. just how they feel about consciousness when talking about it.
And there is none. any papers that that exist today are all based in theory around the existance of consciousness and ideas of what consciousness means. no hard facts.
but if you question a vegan on their feefees about consiousness they ask you for the science studies and facts and freely call you insane for daring to question them.
Apparently you’re not supposed to consume anything with a brain that would support thought and a nervous system according to their ideas of consciousness. So it appears sea cucumbers, star fish and jelly fish are vegan food according to their beliefs of consciousness.
of course they loose their shit if you challenge it to any depth like this.
dont get me wrong: im all for the plant based diet as its better for the body and planet. i just think the reasonings around using the consiousness argument is very weak. if they can say consiousness exists with animals: i can say consiousness exists in plants too.
Hate to say it but you’re doing the same thing OP is complaining about lol
Maybe you’re on the wrong subs? Funny to funny, serious to topic.
It can be lol comment sections are notorious for that kind of behaviour 😅 In the spirit of discourse we embrace it. A little finesse and an argument that has legs goes a long way, but creating a post that asks for peoples opinions is bound to find some that oppose your own!
We roll the boulder up the hill brother man 🫡
No, you are not alone. There are very hostile communities and users here, who go out of there way to inject their hate agenda into everything and at everyone, yes. Lots of deeply unhappy people are only here to spread their misery and whine about their lives and daydream about some utopia… rather than actually take responsibility for their own happiness.
And they find each other and reinforce their toxic views, then go out into more general communities and spread their hate as if it’s gospel. Who will harass you if you dare to suggest there might be a better way to live life.
Block them.
At first, I was very cautious here. After Reddit, I was expecting that people would go through post histories and attack me for misunderstandings and call me an AI bot, like some users do in sites like Reddit… But no. I haven’t had any issues, even when I have put out more controversial opinions or asked dumb questions. I have gotten downvoted occasionally when I have been wrong or misunderstood, which is fair. I have gotten replies from people with different opinions, but they have been polite and sticked in the topic, which is fucking amazing. I haven’t had a single even slightly unpleasant interaction so far.
Folk here have been very helpful, polite, funny or neutral. I’m actually becoming more brave at posting and commenting, and I no longer feel fearful/unpleasant when I see that I have an unread notification. Of course there are communities I have blocked or instances that I avoid but that’s just to curate my feeds.
For me it’s the opposite. Every time I make a fresh account on here I engage a lot in the beginning while the experience is still positive, then as the replies start to feel more pointed and personal I back off more and more.
“Every time I make a fresh account”
Why do you need to keep making new accounts?
Not op, but I keep deleting and creating new accounts too. It just internet hygiene at this point.
I’m from Bora Bora btw. See?
“Hygiene” as in “no-one would take me seriously with this comment history so time to make a new one”?
Hygiene as in I don’t want to get doxxed, or have someone compiling a profile on me. What do I care if a rando takes me seriously or not? 🤷♂️
Yeah my name is recognizable enough now that misogynists will routinely go through my post history. It’s daily at this point.
Huh, I don’t really have much advise to that, but it’s an understanble reaction. I gotta say that there have been times my first reaction to a reply has been negative, but upon rereading it I have noticed that it was just my reaction. I like that here I learn new stuff every day and that people are willing to politely correct me (/share their opinion or experience on the matter.) I hope you find your place, if not here then maybe on some other site!
Not at all.
Yes. Though you needn’t give it any more of your energy than you’re comfortable with. You don’t owe anyone anything. :)
It seems to depend on the instances & communities you interact with and often the time of day as well. There’s no Lemmy monolith so while certain general trends will occur (left leaning, english speaking, technology literate, etc) consensus will always have opposition which seems to be a good thing
There’s a few instances that one should definitely block for their sanity and to quash them seeing propaganda. I talk a fair amount about politics and it seems like around lunch time and at 5PM the neoliberals are out to bash leftists.
Maybe your humour doesn’t suit them. Humour is quite subjective, my son likes Randy Feltface but I’d set fire to him in an instant. He annoys me more than he should
