Hey folks, I have several accounts across the fediverse (Lemmy, pixelfed, mastodon, bookwyrm), and I think it would be neat to have a single identity across all these platforms.
I’m an amateur self hoster, and was looking into Rebased, a fork of Pleroma. If I were to create a single user instance on rebased, what would I be missing over these accounts on all these services? Could I still use the different apps? (Blorp, Pachli, Rocinante). Would I be missing features?

This is just something ActivityPub just doesn’t handle very well. It’s one of the things AT Proto (Bluesky, Tangled) handles a lot better and hopefully something we steal from it.

No, these apps depend on the various platform APIs. Pachli might work, depending on how Mastodon-compatible Pleroma’s API is, but Blorp and Rocinante will not.
My very rough understanding is that ActivityPub is strictly about the protocol of the content and nothing to do with how it’s handled past showing it. So accounts and interfaces aren’t even part of it. Now, could a subset of it, or a parallel protocol for account handling be done (or maybe it is?) It would indeed be nice to have even more feel of a singular “system” but still the pluses of federated across various methods. It might also help fight against some of the bots/spammers who use the many-faced instances to do their stuff making it harder to pin them down.
Oh man, I was going to use rebased since I heard the pleroma folks sucked. Guess I need to do more research.
What exactly is it that you heard about the Pleroma devs? As far as I’ve seen the only people who seem to have something against them always vague post and never specify what is it that bothers them.
They are right-wing “free speech” / 4chan chuds, that tollerated until very recently an even worse dev that is trolling a lot as a TERF, currently works for Truth Social (Trump’s MAGA cesspit) and also made the Rebased fork after being finally kicked out.
The codebase is also a mess full of half-baked ideas. A few years ago the more reasonable people forked off Pleroma into Akkoma and spend significant time cleaning up the codebase.

He actually clashed with the #Pleroma devs and some admins quite a bit while he was working on #Rebased, I forget what about.
I’m probably just parroting vague vibes like you say. The first time I heard of pleroma was in the context of Lemmy.world defederating from a ton of pleroma instances that were far right, or otherwise undesirable. But that’s more the users and not the software itself.
@srasmus @Aeder Figured I’d chime in as I’ve been on the #Fediverse for as long as #Gab joined it (as it was, interestingly enough, the first #Fediverse instance I’ve ever been on!).
The #Pleroma userbase is the most diverse that you’ll find on the #Fediverse. You’ve got crazy alt right folks, gooners, pedophiles, left wingers (usually left wing #Pleroma users will be #trans who just want to self host or be on a super small instance) and more. /1
@srasmus @Aeder A good rule of thumb is to consider muting the ten or so biggest #Pleroma instances if you don’t have the stomach to come across edgy or undesirable content while on the #Fediverse.
If you mean “people that use Pleroma”, it’s not the end of the world. You just need to block or avoid people that flock to a given instance, or do that for the instances themselves.
If you mean the devs, maybe keep an archived fork of the software being used, and use that if they start causing problems that damage the quality of the software, and move to that build while you refactor your instance.
Also I don’t think I’ve seen Pleroma devs in the wild before, and users I also don’t generally see, so going by the premise of what you said, @srasmus@slrpnk.net.
And the fediverse can be quite diverse, and so long as the software licenses are respected, there’s not much devs or external instances can interfere legitimately.
Better use Akkoma. Rebased is made by really shitty people that even the Pleroma people kicked out if I remember correctly.
Compatibility between Lemmy etc. and Pleroma etc. isn’t the best, since the latter has no concept of communities.
Maybe you could try Mbin or the experimental support in Piefed to also subscribe to personal microblogs. That will be probably the closest to a single app that does both.
But the Mastodon compatible apps will not work with that (and anyway have no concept of communities or groups).
Personally, I’d pick Mbin, Friendica or PieFed.
I can observe two main types of social media style in the fediverse, microblogging-styled (e.g. Twitter-inspired), or group-styled (e.g. Reddit / BBS-inspired).
The rest’s usually variations of these two, or are interoperable to varying degrees with these main types.
And Mbin, Friendica and PieFed all explicitly try to integrate groups and microblogging, meaning they’d be the more overarching ones.
And sure, one solution always means sacrificing another, so alts may still be needed.
And on Pleroma’s case, it would seem it supports communities but only partially? I wonder if it’s like Mastodon. If so, your feed can become noisy.
In my case, as I’m mainly on Mbin, when I get to host my own instances (life got in the way when I tried…), I’d probably make, besides the new Mbin instance:
- either a PieFed or RSS Parrot instance for having RSS posts as fediverse posts
- a Peertube instance for videos / audio (?) / shorts
- maybe some Lemmy instance and a Mastodon one for tests
- a NeoDB instance since it’s the most unique type of content not handled by the softwares above
Can piefed make microblogging posts? I found that cross posting from mastodon works better, but can you make straight posts like on mastodon?
No, but every PieFed post you make will be sent to your Mastodon followers. And you can follow people on Mastodon and have their posts appear in your home feed.
Mastodon integration like this still very new and experimental for PieFed but is a high priority for future development.
Haven’t tested making posts on PieFed, but will try later.
