I don’t even have an exact answer for myself, but I do find myself being happy when I’ve managed to fix something like a vehicle, got a shower later, and crack open a cold beer.

What brings you joy/happiness?

During the time it took you to post your comment, I managed to inform our new neighbor that his van tire is low.

He looks to me like one of those sort of people you just don’t fuck with, but nothing scares me anymore.

He was very thankful that I told him his van tire is getting low…

That brought me a piece of happiness, just to help a stranger, before his tire goes flat…

We moved a few weeks ago. Yesterday afternoon, my new neighbour who I had not yet met yelled over the fence at me. We met up out front, introduced ourselves, did the social thing, and then he said “hey, your new house has an air conditioner, and there’s a cover on it. You probably want to take that off.”

He was right. I did. Thanks new neighbour, for being…well, for being a neighbour.

    Mostly, seeing my family succeed.

I’m not very happy very often, but I watched my son get award after award last week, and was happy. A year ago, my wife finished her Masters’ degree with a 4.0 GPA, and I was happy.

Personally, this morning I went for the first >100km motorcycle ride of the season. Once I was out of traffic and riding through some of the prettiest scenery on the planet, I was happy.

I’m a similar way. I feel a deeper happiness when my family is happy and achieves great things. So usually for external reasons rather than internal?

It’s sort of like how I enjoy giving others gifts or experiences, while not needing much for myself.

Pleasure/ease is not happiness, as I have been a directionless, purposeless NEET with no responsibilities but enough disposable income to finance my hedonism, and a full-time worker, part-time student married man, and the former made me suicidal after a while. If you’re lucky enough that you can just basically live like a pig, rolling in your own filth and just chilling until death, then good for you (not you, OP, just the “global” you 😅) but I can’t.

I’d say “the feeling/mental state resulting from realising you’re living according to your values (which involves identity and self esteem), with defined objectives, balancing duty and pleasure/ease and in the momentary absence of great emotional pain/distress”. Or something like that. 👍

Happiness is a tiny moment where, just for a brief second, everything seems right. Maybe things aren’t so bad, maybe everything will turn out okay. It’s inconsistent, fleeting, unreliable, and it might be the most beautiful thing we’re capable of.

One time a friend was talking and evaluating the concept of being happy and if he was or not at this point in time.

He said that because X, and Y and Z he could look and say that “yes he was happy”.

That was many years ago. I’m still tormented about that conversation and that concept of being happy. It all seemed absolutely alien and I had no idea what he was talking about. I don’t think I have ever felt that concept.
