Not a fan of the new look. If you’re in the same boat, plug:
about:config
into your URL bar, and search for:
browser.nova.enabled
Toggle it to false using the button to the right.
There are functional changes that Nova also introduced: this won’t effect those - only the aesthetic.

sigh…pills. one of the worst trends in UI design within the past couple years. pills, borders for everything, purple, jetbrainsmono. and Firefox decided “pills is the way to go!”. It’s what i’ve started calling “The Claude Look”.
I really hate the pills look.
We’re just going to alternate between making UIs more round and less round for all eternity.

Meh.
I’m old. I miss the way Mozilla Suite and Netscape looked. The more of these “modern” trends that pass by the more they all look the same to me.
Thankfully Thunderbird is less affected by bullshit like this. As long as I can view my daily feed through RSS in table view, I’m happy.
It’s not so bad. Since everything is pill-shaped I more often remember to take my medication. :3
Thank you so much!
The new UI is fine for me, but it’s also nice to see they kept the nova.enabled flag after the update for those who don’t want it.
The best change for me was moving compact tabs from an about:config flag to an actual setting. Was using that before and it’s nice to see it’s not going away after all.
I like it, so this must be all my fault. Sorry, everyone.
Thank you. I’ve read your post yesterday morning and in the afternoon I had to face the change. I came straight back for the fix.
I wonder if people still think about these changes or it’s all just scripted now. This time we make things a bit rounder, next time a bit less, add a tiny bit of space here, take it off there, more gradients or less. All the while pretending that it’s more modern or something when it’s actually just another combination of the same shit. I don’t mind, I just find it odd that anyone cares or thinks it’s somehow new.
Staff meetings where employees must justify themselves to out-of-touch bosses.
Aero was probably the last time I ever saw a new interface style and thought it looked cool. Now it’s just endless reshuffling of parameters. Maybe we just arrived at the ideal set of parameters to reshuffle and any major change at this point could only make things worse.
every day i read tech news and am vindicated in my decision to run debian stable, maybe i’ll see this new ui in 3 years
EDIT: well, this is ironic… within the past 24 hours, debian trixie-security has bumped firefox-esr from 140 to 153…
If you only dislike the horrible AI-looking color scheme, you can install the Proton theme (by Firefox) from the settings.
In case you prefer a store link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-proton/I honestly have no idea how anyone thought this disgusting mess was a good idea to roll out to everyone.
I’ve been using Lepton/Firefox-Ui-Fix for about 5 years now and haven’t had to worry Ui updates since.
Seeing the blog post I wasn’t sold on the changes, but I thought to myself it’s usually just a matter of getting used to it.
Then I realized I’m reading this from GNOME Web and I hardly use Firefox at all any more. For the first time I will not get used to it. Then I saw the links to Twitter and Linkedin, and remembered exactly why I left that trainwreck behind.
Thanks for this. I was open minded until I saw it for myself. Your post fixed a problem I didn’t know I was about to have.
doing A : B testing with that toggle. It’s definitely hard to see it as anything but a UI downgrade.
The toolbar icons have a blurrier look on my computer on Nova? They just look worse too imo design wise.
Oh thanks! I was waiting to try it out. Gonna update now to enable it. Looks nice.
Thank you!!!
