Does anyone actually want this? Like it’s kind of interesting but is it actually something anyone wants?
I absolutely want to see robots automating hard manual labor. I also want to see affordable personal robots that can take care of all my chores so I can enjoy doing things I’m actually interested in.
It’s a demonstration of capability, not utility.
I imagine a display such as this drives Elon mad with the dismal human-dancing-in-a-costume display he put on for his completing product. If true, I want this.
What do you mean, as entertainment? Most people currently seem entertained by these.
But this is just getting started.
As helpful androids? Sure, can it one day clean my house and do my shopping? I’d buy one (though I suppose they would have some awful privacy problems).
As military robots? Can they one day operate a tank? Carry and fire weapons? I can think of a few people that want that.
Well there you go… I guess I am in the minority on this. I don’t want these things anywhere near me or my family.
But yes I can imagine cops loving the idea of these things crushing protestors throats in the street.
Yes I can see some really altruistic uses for these but they’re outweighed by the malicious ones.
Like RING cameras and the other brands, would be super cool to help locate lost children and elderly but bad people are going to use them for fascism.
Truly impressive. Either I have been alive for a long time or the rate of progress is accelerating. I thought we were decades away from this.
Yeah I treated all of the stated limitations of MIT robotics projects for the next 25 years as universal & wasn’t aware of the progress in manufacturing + logistics until say 2019
Very nice
Also very scary as this is just the next step after what Boston dynamics has already shown. You can bet your ass that military leaders are jerking off over these things
Granted, their battery life will still be Abysmal but that too is being resolved over time.
I’m not afraid of self aware terminators. I’m afraid of sad dictators with tiny penis syndrome getting access to shit like this in, say, a decade from now.
I think most of this is choreographed. Autonomous killing machines are probably a few weeks away
I’d think autonomous killing machines wouldn’t have a humanoid shape, as it would be optimized for efficient lethality and not things like grasping external tools and all-terrain movement that is calorically efficient and biomechanically sustainable.
This concept short film came out in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2tpwW0kmU
I can see them having to fill multipurpose roles. Patrolling Guard, escort, checkpoint guards, tunnel rat, climb, then the straight out killing machine. No different than the combat teams we have today. APC, tank, specialty teams (motor),
If it came to fighting them humans would resort to tactics to defeat them or take away their advantage. Tunnels and ladders would be simplest examples.
Let’s see how well they can run in the forest.
y’all think the part where one falls and jumps back on it’s feet is part of the choreography
If not, it’s even more impressive they can automatically react like that. But it was, just to show they can.
They were going for a drunken master motif so… Yeah probably. Which is bold to expect so few flaws that you put in a purposeful one to joke about.
Well at least they seem short so we should be able to just throw them or kick them over with ease
Why do they look mocap and not robotic? Like if it’s a robot, the movements should be far more efficient and literally robotic looking. This just looks like “look, we can make them execute scripted macro movements with micro auto adjustments”. Which is an achievement in itself, but not exactly as advanced as this video suggests at face value. I could be wrong, but something about it feels off to me and this is just my guess as to why.
because that’s what this is. Premade animations choreographed and scripted.
BUT
Do you have any idea what insane technology in soft and hardware is neccessary to make this happen?
this is beyond impressive, and China is way ahead of everyone else. Electric cars, Robotics, Renewable energy, medical research, Drone technology. The west needs to get rid of the incompetent conservatives that cling to a world that no longer exists or the west is the new third world.
Yeah, don’t compare them to the ideal in your head. Compare them to the best their competitors have put out there.
You know, like the assholes here in the US that would just have humans remote control them from the next room to get worse results. And yeah of course China can lie and fake shit too, but I think this would probably be just as impressive if they were all mimicking the movements of a mocap-suited athlete off stage.
Chat, are we cooked?
time to learn Chinese.
"In German, oder English
I know how to count down,
Und I’m learning Chinese,
Says Wernher Von Braun"
How do I say “please don’t harvest my organs I am a smoked and alcoholic since the age of 11 !” In Mandarin?
Wrong country
Don’t worry, one look at you and they’ll know you’re not worth harvesting.
you do realize that’s propaganda spread by a cult that convinces people they can purify their organs to the point of gaining levitation abilities right?
Propaganda of what ? The robots will collect human organs so they can finally solve the trolley problem. Needs many MANY repetition of the experiment. They just happened to understand only Mandarin because they were created in China.
They don’t need your trashed organs, they will kick you so much that all of them explode
No they won’t
you don’t have to say that, the social-score app will show that to everyone who looks you up.
libs basically have all the intellectual capacity of a parrot, proudly regurgitating a handful of lines they memorized
not a real thing
Are we sure this isn’t AI made video? This looks so unreal to me. Last time I saw human robots, they didn’t even go up in the staircase.
it would be very very good AI made, and i have seen those robots do these things in tech demos before, so they definitely exist.
Whoa what the hell, that’s insane!
Butlerian Jihad when?

I’ll fight you in that war. I’ll fight for science, for better living standards, for the future, against reactionary anprims.
I think it’s not about primitivism, but discarding tools that atrophy us rather than empower us.
I’m not sure what side humanoid robots fall on.
Robots are always on the side of their masters.
Kung fu robots don’t work for usa, so they’re on my side.
Boston dynamics dog robots work for usa, so they’re not on my side.
but discarding tools that atrophy us rather than empower us.
In the book it discarded tools that empowered us and ending up atrophying humanity basically forever, and even when the atrophy supposedly ended for the price of unbelivable suffering, it was only vulgar numerical and territorial growth, not empowerment. And it STILL required usage of not only forbidden tech but also technomagic required to even have a primitivist interstellar civilization.
Butlerian jihad was deeply reactionary war and every leftist should fight against the bastards that set up the Great Convention system.
The Jihad was the basis for the development of mentats, navigators, prescience, most of what the Bene Gesserit could do, etc.
The spice became a cause of atrophy as well when people became reliant on it, but that’s consistent with the theme.
Fuck the Great Convention obviously, but the Jihad was (mostly) good actually.
The Jihad was the basis for the development of mentats, navigators, prescience, most of what the Bene Gesserit could do, etc.
Supremacist superhuman cults and objectification of humans are good and empowering according to you? Wow how nice. Also you forgot nice tleilaxan things like turning every woman into breeding tank or genetically engineered slaves. Prescience? Did you missed literally every book constantly saying “prescience bad”?
The spice became a cause of atrophy as well when people became reliant on it, but that’s consistent with the theme.
Yes it’s consistent with the theme of butlerian jihad atrophying humanity to the point of being hooked on barely understood space heroin. The atrophy and decay of human minds went so far barely anyone even thought about that.
Fuck the Great Convention obviously, but the Jihad was (mostly) good actually.
Jihad literally plunged humanity into millenia of slavery and serfdom. I find it absolutely wild that any leftist would support this.
The Jihad empowered people to do independently even more than what prior generations could do with computers. I don’t think the weird cults were the only possible outcome, they just made for a better story about power and politics.
Independently? Of what, humanity’s creations? Well, that’s true, jihadists destroyed basically entire civilization. 99% of humanity were slaves or serfs, the nobility and merchants were even more static than ever, the instant teleportation that eventually allowed for galactic or even multi galactic scale spread seen basically no use except making money since the distant planet Arrakis was just 200 LY from Earth and most of mentioned worlds even closer. Most “progressive” factions like Ixians or Tleilaxu took thousands of years to actually invent something, even entirely legal. Even maintaining the space civilization relied on impossible magical tech. Education and science were abysmal, superstition widespread, it made the cults inevitable, just they were real because of space heroin and magic.
they just made for a better story about power and politics.
This isn’t really the story about power and politics, it’s a classical Greek tragedy where everything is fucked no matter what because everything has been setup to fail by the story premise, which is precisely the butlerian jihad.
Looks nice. Not excited to be fighting to the death on some random hill surrounded by a thousand of these.
Don’t worry, you’re much more likely to be instantly annihilated by a tiny suicide drone.
Can i have it arrive before my next rent payment?
They probably won’t splurge for the emp proof coating.
We in the west don’t even remember what a society can achieve without the bloodsucking billionaire parasites and shareholders siphoning off wealth. For us that would be “splurging”, for less insane societies it would be common sense.
We really do live in the cyber punk dystopia predicted. It’s just way less neon lights.
They’ll release a gamer version of these robots with RGB don’t worry.
only if you live in upper north america; western europe; or australia. lol
That’s damn true. All of SE Asia is basically a neon (*actually LED) vortex
i wish i could move there
Sigh… I mean… I tried. And while there is much to be said for it, there is a lot to be said against it too. It’s kind of a win some lose some deal. Depends on where you live. If I was in the USA I’d fuck right off to basically anywhere, and SE Asia wouldn’t be a bad bet. Thing is, they don’t just accept people willy nilly. Unless you want to endure a permanent border hopping enema, you need a work visa, student visa, or retirement visa, and those all come with their own hurdles.
Good luck tho, I can def vibe with the sentiment.
These are copying human movements i think. But yeah, there is an attempt to make these robots look cool so humans wont resist when they patrol the streets.
It would look way to robotic if they manually inputed the choreography with mathematics.
At 0:32 when the robots bend their knees they all do two little hops with one foot to keep balanced, but not all robots are doing the same hop. The middle robot does two large hops whereas the left rear robot does one small hop and then only lifts his “toes”.
It could be a combination of pre-programmed movements with a balancing program on top
Yeah or just multiple people controlling groups of them. Its impressive though, sure. I just hate the idea behind it - to get people to like these things.
Did the humanoid shape gave it away? Or was it the Kung Fu?
But will they be properly taught to harass and murder people for not being white enough?
I mean, sure, you can probably make an argument for less racism when we have robots. But still, its going to be pretty horrible for everyone.
Probably not one that stands up to scrutiny.
If they have fixed programming, the bias would be consistent, but still there, because it would be based upon systems that are already inherently bias.
Any current ML system is beholden to the data/constraints it was built with, if inherent bias exists in the data it will exist in the resulting system.
That’s before you even start taking in to account the infrastructure that would be managing them being potentially corrupt or having their own interpretations of “public safety”.
“These bots from <generic third party> are bringing in more cases against the <“good” people>, but these ones from <tech company with the same bigoted ideology as us> can be tweaked to target the <“bad” people>, which of these two companies should we purchase our inventory from ?”
The robots staying stable and not falling over is still very impressive.
Sentdex made some videos about programming Unitree robots and it looked like absolute hell and makes this video all the more impressive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc1nhT8beTU
These are copying human movements i think
You’re saying that like it’s not impressive even if that were true. Human motion capture can’t react fast enough to loss of balance with the speed of the moves they were doing (neither can a fully pre-programmed routine with no real time processing), especially for something smaller than the human operator for which you wouldn’t have the intuition of how to right it, especially with conventional motion capture that doesn’t give you feedback like moving your body does (unless they built a fully featured motion capture system that’s both super low latency and gives the operator complete and accurate mechanical feedback on all degrees of freedom, in which case you’d think they’d feature that more than the robots themselves because that’s way more impressive.) Even if they were all piloted by humans, they’re still autonomously processing all those motion inputs to be compatible with its body.
But yeah, there is an attempt to make these robots look cool so humans wont resist when they patrol the streets.
Don’t worry, we’ll never have this problem in the West because humans over here like being police bastards too much to let some robots take their fun away.
Don’t worry, we’ll never have this problem in the West because humans over here like being police bastards too much to let some robots take their fun away.
Most Americans would be happy if the cops just started wearing better tasting boots
We are screwed.
I find the fact that westerners can only imagine howany new technology will be used against them is the surest sign that western civilization is an utter failure.
You’re making a lot of deeply flawed assumptions here.
Imagining bad scenarios doesn’t mean it’s the only thing one can imagine. Also, I don’t think the person specified in what way “we” are screwed; it could have been humanity in general, which would be akin to science fiction as a cautionary tale; it could have been internationally. Also, people often have mixed feelings about technology, and one person expressing a single comment of caution I think hardly defines the failure of all of whatever “western” civilization is.
It’s kind of fun to see you recognize that there are assumptions at play, and then do the same yourself. Technology as a threat. What if the threat is not the technology, but the west’s inability to keep their resources from being stolen by shareholders and billionaires? Because that is what is holding us back from developing and making the future ourselves. we just watch all of our resources go to infighting, incompetent management egos, and mega-yachts and fighting progress.
China produced more billionaires than the US this last year. Clearly things are not what they appear anymore.
Also, the West has been completely fascist for a very long time thus the system is supposed give all the resources to the wealthy. Democracy and China’s communism are just window dressings for capitalists.
Now that they’re successful you want to claim its capitalism? Nope. Its socialism, always has been.
The protest in Tiananmen Square were anti-western capitalist reforms. Sad to know you can’t be bothered with actual history.
There was never socialism or communism. It was a dictatorship that turned fascist.
You want proof? Billionaires buddy.
I’m not making any assumptions, I’m going by what I see as the predominant narrative regarding any new technology in the west. All I see is people moaning how AI or robots will end us all. Whether they’re referring to us collectively or just to the west is irrelevant.
My point is that people living under the dictatorship of capital have a negative view of technology because technological progress isn’t used in public interest. It’s used by the oligarchs for oppression and surveillance, and hence people fear that any new technology will be used to repress them further.
We can contrast this with the mood I’m China where most people are optimistic regarding technological progress because they see technology improving their lives with things like high speed trains, amazing public infrastructure, factory automation, and so on.
I want to give you a hug. You must consume so much propaganda to think us different.
i wish you could recognize that you consume just as much propaganda as the chinese, the difference being that your propaganda is aimed at keeping you small and fight your own fellow citizens, whereas the chinese propaganda is telling it’s people that they are doing great things, and how they can shape the world by working together.
What an insightful counterpoint you’ve mustered there, I’m truly in awe at the quality of your intellect.
