I’ve never owned a house, but I did own a toilet.

Buddy of mine was remodeling his bathroom, and didn’t know what to do with the old toilet, so I told him I’d get rid of it for him. Once thoroughly cleaned, disassembled, and sunk into the ground, the tank and bowl made a functional planter box and birdbath.

My toilet had this problem that was really multiple problems. The ancient float valve would get stuck until it was far enough underwater that it would suddenly jump free and abruptly shut off the water, causing some loud banging in the pipes. The water level was able to get high enough for that because the fill rate of that valve was really high - enough that the water level kept rising even past where it was draining into the overflow pipe. So if it ever got more stuck, that could have meant an unlimited amount of water overflowing over the top of the tank and into my bathroom.

I was able to resolve this very harrowing circumstance with $10 for a new part and a few minutes of work, but this place used to be a rental and it occurs to me that the people who rented here would not have had the privilege of being allowed to do that.

My house has low water pressure and the tank used to take about half hour to fill. Before it could br filled again. After few years i realised the problem and installed a low pressure valve. Works like a dream now. But the place used to be a rental before too with more people living in it.

A home doesn’t equal having a toilet either everywhere on this planet. I remember walking through areas of Shanghai in the early 2000s where chamber pots were collected and emptied in the morning. Erecting a roof is easier than hooking up to water and sewage pipes.

Sometimes in Germany you can see rental apartments that don’t include a Kitchen or a Bathroom. You’re expected to move in with your old one or buy a new kitchen & bathroom. So, I think plenty of people own their toilets without owning a house or an apartment.

Until now I’d never thought about the fact that I own 2 toilets for the first time in my life, so thanks I guess.

Damn right! I’m in construction, and I don’t own a home, but I have owned multiple toilets over the years - mostly because I can’t bring myself to throw away a perfectly good fixture just because the client wants a different style/color installed. The place I currently rent has fancy toilets in both bathrooms thanks to me.

I totally gave away a toilet in a circumstance like that. When I got someone to install my new toilet they asked if they could take the new one to a reno they were working on that didn’t have a functioning toilet. Honestly was a win win situation.
