🏴☠️ to the high seas my friends!
Exhibit A for “If buying isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing.”
To be totally fair, they didn’t buy this book, they borrowed it. Still a good reason to use other libraries
Well, true. But it sounds like the library didn’t own the book either, all things considered.
I had that exact problem with Netflix, now I have Jellyfin
Same except instead of Jellyfin I have Nuvio because I rather have a one-click streaming solution, rather than having to manually build a library from my existing media.
Basically all I want is a system that stores my shows in some sort of logical order and keeps track of where I am in a movie / episode other than that I don’t need much more.
Jellyfin?
Kodi?
It does the same no, stream your library anywhere. Thats what Jellyfin does, Netflixify your personal library
From what I understand, no it doesn’t. You still need a personal library for it to work. With Nuvio, you don’t need anything at all. Just pick a show/movie you want to watch, and watch it.
With Jellyfin, you have to take the time to rip your discs (or pirate them), then add them to your Jellyfin library. There is no such issue with Nuvio. It’s basically Netflix + Prime + Disney + HBO + Peacock + Crunchyroll + everything else combined into a single app. No “personal library” required.
So, it’s just popcorntime with a new name?
You point jellyfin at a folder with media, and press a button. Ideally you separate them into tv and movies, but you can absolutely just lazily point and shoot.
Again, I don’t HAVE a folder of media. I don’t WANT a folder of media! That’s the entire reason why I switched to Nuvio! I got tired of having to rip discs and download torrents to build said “folder of media”. I just want to stream.
Honestly I don’t understand why you guys insist on fighting me about this. Clearly y’all don’t understand what Nuvio does. I implore you to look up how it works before you reply again. Please, for my mental health!
I… Dont understand the problem? Like if you want to just double click a file and open in VLC, just do that? If you have any level of organization at all, you have a folder of media??
Like, i have a folder thats /media/shows. I want them in a library, so i tell jellyfin that /media/shows is my library, wait maybe 20 seconds and i have a netflix level library.
Im not fighting you. I simply dont understand why you either…
- have some level of organization and thus can point jellyfin at it
or
- have no organixation whatsoever and thus just double click to open in VLC
Update; i understand secret 3rd option of
- you simply have no media on your pc whatsoever and thus want a collection of sources to stream from
Which i can respect. Im horrified, but, i respect it.
Yes, it’s option 3. Why are you so “horrified” by this? Does the concept of people watching YouTube/Freetube/Piped horrify you too?
Look, this isn’t music we’re talking about; when it comes to movies and TV, I see no point in building a personal library, just how I see no point in downloading YouTube videos. I have my favorites that I’ll re-watch once in a blue moon, yes, but generally once I’m done with a movie/episode, I’m done with it for good. Therefore I see no point in having a movie/TV collection wasting valuable hard drive space.
Before I discovered Stremio/Nuvio, my workflow was like this:
Boot up PC > fire UP VPN and open Firefox > Navigate to 1337X > search for something to watch (assuming that I already know what I want to watch) > click magnet link and wait for seeds > transfer file to Jellyfin library > boot up TV > open Jellyfin and watch > delete fileAfter switching, my workflow is now this:
Boot up TV > Open Nuvio > Browse for movie/show > WatchI hope I explained it well enough by now. Do you understand the difference now? One of these options requires way more work than the other. Nuvio works exactly like Netflix. It even recommends you content based on your viewing history. No personal library required.
First time I hear that name, how does it differ from stremio, which it seems to parallel heavily?
General improvements upon stremio in various aspects. Stremio’s Android TV app just constantly crashes or fails to get sources for me, so I switched.
This one has stuff like separate profiles w/pin passwords, (imo) nicer and faster UI, and has integrations like aniskip.
It also can directly use stremio’s addons and there are ways to import your watch history, addons and libraries, so it is super easy to migrate
Kavita
Haven’t heard of it, haven’t googled it, have my own solutions,
But I’m pretty sure what you’re doing and thank to for your service.
And now to investigate…
It’s software for hosting your eBooks. I have it on my Debian server and can grab it from any device with a browser. (on network or tunneling in).
How does it compare to calibre?
Piracy is a service problem.
I’m not advocating for piracy, but they’re doing it to themselves.
I’m not advocating for piracy
I am. Don’t put up with bullshit like this, just pirate the damn thing.
I’m advocating for it.
Honestly I just want to bitcoin/zelle/venmo/whatever the author a little money for his awesome book and shortcut everything
This is why I just pirate whatever music I want, then go to shows and hand the musicians cash. Never gotten a bad reaction, everybody wins this way.
Yes, pirating to cut all the middle leeches then sending the artist money directly seems like the most sensible way to me.
His website does have a contact form if you want to reach out to him https://www.edwardashton.com/
I, uh, know people who have done that.
Did you find it yet? It’s listed here
i was about to say this is a job for anna’s-archive.
im so happy to find someone else already linked it because i came in here ready to drop a link lol.
I love how that’s just a normal thing to do here. One of the first green flags I ever got about this site
You’re welcome.
Shadow Library Uptime Monitor (SLUM)
Tracking public availability status for shadow library services
When libgen went down and I wanted to keep reading the uncle festers guides, I came across this one.
I tend to misplace my good friend Anna’s address, thank you for this.
Doesn’t seem to be accurate, I can only reach the first zlibrary link. It may be my ISP 🤷♂️. Very cool project though.
Very cool project though.
I thank the person or people who’s created it too.
I have no part in the creation or ownership of that site. I have no idea who created or owns the site.
I just spread the site whenever I have the opportunity.
I had this happen multiple times while binging new shows…

There’s always Anna’s Archive or Z Library. Those copies won’t ever go away
How TF does this happen to a book sitting in your hands? I have never had this happen to any of my books, hardcover or paperback.
I have dropped a book into the bath. Strictly speaking it wasn’t unavailable, but it was unreadable.
But at least it was your own fault. Much easier to forgive yourself than a global kafkaesque system of greed-driven bureaucracy.
Yes. Bezos didn’t slap the book out of my hand into the water, and threaten to remove my entire bookshelf.
My epub calibre also shows no signs of manipulation in the timestamps…Very weird…
Super easy way to solve that problem:

That content is not FOR YOUR REGION

Just get one of these:

Side note: you know what is fucking wild about bibles? It’s an amalgamation of some really, really old shit, and despite that, there are numerous copyrighted versions. King James is not one of them, but there are a lot.
They get around being Public Domain by virtue of being “novel translations”, but when you see the differences between them, it seems like largely bullshit.
Haven’t met a Bible that isn’t largely bullshit yet.
Jefferson bible?

Wait. @Mickey7@lemmy.world the c/shitpost grandpa?
Who knew he had a biography
That’s strange. It’s available on any US storefront that I pull up.
They were reading a UK edition, which has never been available in the US.
Why we have to sail the high seas.
Yeah I’m gonna guess it’s based on whatever service you are using losing distribution rights to it, because the book is available in the US pretty much everywhere.
My local library 😪
well, then it would be your borrowing time ran out, perhaps, and the app just said ‘screw you’ instead of offering a check-out renewal
Ohhh don’t tell anyone but I get all my ebooks from my cities library with Calibre. There’s an extension you can add that removes the drm (afaicr it was made by the same guy that created drm) and now you have the full ebook.
I know ;)
I still want to give the author money for an excellent book though. I’ll find a way to buy it.
They’re showing a UK edition. British books arent generally available in the US or vice versa when a domestic edition is available.
That’s the original US book version. The UK version is white and yellow.

Note the pull quote at the top is attributed to The Times. This is the current UK edition cover.
